FiiO X5 preview world tour--tour members, claim your souvenir for the X5 tour! p.123 - Page 46

Thanks for you quick reply, musicheaven. That was a pretty comprehensive and detailed answer to my query. I feel like a member of some minority group, but I am happy that I do not have to use a separate bathroom or drinking fountain ( I don't drink unfiltered water with fluoride or chlorine anyway, lol). Maybe our group can use a MLK of our own, huh?

As far as artist/album/track I guess track would cover the movement in the piece, but yes, let's hope Fiio gets the nomenclature to be more granular, as you put it, though I don't grok your use of granular.

Hello AmberOzL. Well, my IEM is no longer a Triple-fi, it was modified to the furthest extent possible with 4 drivers by UniqueMusic (UM), so what do you think of that? Wouldn't that change your whole opinion, also considering the superior silver cables, also supplied by UM? If not, what would be your recommendation for someone like me?

btw, I didn't care much for the unmodified trifle-fis either and their execreble included cables but when modified, I did like them, conjoined to the J3s I had til recently. Oh well, I will have to do with the Sansa Fuze+ for a while and put up with the awful treble extension/presentation they give, though I guess I can't complain, given that I bought a reconditoned model for a mere $21.00, just to have something, b/c my J3s got lost.

I guess I'll try the 01, 02, 03 solution and then go to within the file to select what I like. Will let you know when I get my X5, but don't hold your breath, lol, it may be 3 months or more for that to happen. Meanwhile, I'm gonna make due with the Fuze+ but I'll mostly be listening to podcasts from CoastToCoastAM so I don't have to put up with treble breakup and undistinguished SQ.

But if you can recommend an IEM for a classical fan like me for the X5, that would be appreciated, and I will give your selection some thought, for sure, AmberOzL.

@ Ripvanlink I think the X5 does have the ability to sort music by Genre?

Well, I didn't listen to that additional, I can't say much. They added extra drivers and all, it is a whole new product apparently.

I would gladly help you on either universal or custom iems but there is a big question out there, how much you can spend and from where you are willing to purchase. For example, Europeans usually get problems and extra taxes from non-Eu purchases.

What I can say is, depending on your budget, you can look for respected persons opinion. Average Joe and Joker are 2 fellas that I would trust to the end. For classical music, I would look for monitors with rather balanced sound, no big emphasis is anywhere on the FR spectrum, airy and "out of head" presentation. 2 top monitors comes to my mind, they are quite costly, but for this hobby, we spend lots of money to get satisfied right? Tralucent Audio 1+2 for universal (it has a custom-like shape btw) and Hidition NT6 for custom.

While I also like my own monitors, SE5way, I have to admit, I wouldn't call them the best for classical music. To me, they perform lovely and more than good enough, but they perform way better for some other genres, like rap for example.

Also, it's a workaround for the browsing by artist-album-song which the database, AFAIK, does not support.

You are missing the point. I have the DX50. I have the X5. I have Rockboxed DAPs. Databases always have problems. Always.

File browsers don't have problems because they are windows. Window are transparent. As soon as you start getting clever with the browser, as soon as it is no longer a transparent window, you introduce the potential for database like problems.

I organize my music like this> Artist/Albums/Songs. So for me, it would be seeing all my folders in one place like foobar and there would be no same name for sure.

Same name is an example of kind of issue that will potentially screw up a merged browser.

If the X5 suddenly abandons having a reliable file browser, I am going to be really pissed because the database sure as hell doesn't work. Guys, let's solve problems instead of creating them!

Yes. You go into Genre and then all your songs are mixed together in alphabetical order by file name so that all the 01 songs are first, then all the 02 songs...

I think its still a serious question on if strapping an amp to an iPod is better than DAP's. I personally have been prefering audiophile DAP's because they make the size much more manageable and I only have to worry about one thing. I'm also a fan of the touchscreen interface from Apple. Some people that don't care for the all in one nature of the audiphile DAP's should still consider these combo alternatives.

I would strap some amps to test. But I lost my LOD :( That's the second FiiO L9 I lost. Gosh. I can't lose an earbud but my LOD's keep dissapearing.

 Pretty decent setup as well

I've seriously 'considered' Apple's selfish refusal to permit their customers memory expansion, so no thanks - they can shove their i-Pretentiousness...

I guess this is one thing you don't have to worry about that is loosing an IC for the X5, it does not need any! ;)

There's A LOT of accessories with the X5. I may not lose a LOD but I can definately lose a lot of other stuff.

In my unboxing video, I kept pulling more stuff out of the box. It was like Christmas!

When I got the box, I felt like a kid in a candy store. ;)

I actually wasn't that excited for the X5 when I got it.

I already said this, but I had a few things to do (albeit they weren't very important). And so the X5 sat on my desk in its package for a few hours.

There are still some issues, but unless the AK120 can convince me otherwise when I get it, the X5 may - although I am not guaranteeing anything - be my recommendation for one of the product's of the year.

We put this product of the year guide out last year

http://www.audio360.org/guides_a0011_2013_stocking_stuffers_guide.php

Maybe the X5 has a spot on it this year? Who knows. If FiiO fixes some of the UI issues, it may very well may be.

I'll certainly second that!

Astounding review from Brooko.  You've set a very high bar mate.

As the last reviewer in my group, by the time I receive the X5,  I suspect everything will have already been said.

(Will be an opportunity for a Monty Python moment, you know, everyone that follows has to outdo what was said before...    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13JK5kChbRw

"And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you.")

AND

Joe and James

Merging the two cards for browsing would be important.  I am looking forward to the opportunity to be able to browse in a seamless  way all my ALAC and FLAC on one device.  This will be particularly when finally microSD cards more than 64GB start to ship.  It is one very attractive feature of the AK240, it's high internal capacity, 256GB, which also allows the addition further of a single microSD.  I have in excess of 500GB of tracks I would love to be able browse in one place.

Assuming we take the iTunes browsing experience as the "gold" standard (not that I agree with that view, but it has millions of users by default who understand how it works), the question may well be "what would Apple do".  And hey, if Bill Gates was asking that question of his Microsoft people as late as 2000 when he was still CEO (http://www.macrumors.com/2014/01/26/mac-team-30th-anniversary-party/  - 9th paragraph), it may not be a bad question to ask in finalising the UI for the X5 ??
