I actually used the extension above on my cards and they all were recognized so the dap can handle those extensions. Actually my converter to AAC did not use the m4a extension but aac so go figure, it's a well known and the oldest file converter on earth.

Great review Lee and by then way thank god for your review being posted, mine will come soon but I keep updating it so once I am done doing that, I will post. Did you get it reviewed by Joe first for accuracy?

Great review lee!

It's awesome to see all this praise coming from an AK120 owner.

Fiio better make 20,000 in the first batch because even then it'll be sold out in days.

I will surely be buying one.:D

The FiiO X5 allows for Coax outputn (S/PDIF) through its port up top and through the S/PDIF cable adapter they included

I plugged the adapter into the coaxila out, and then plugged my coaxial cable into it. I then set C4 to receive S/PDIF input and that was it

Great review, Lee. Easy to get a feel for it from your descriptions. Thanks.

Sounds like it's in the realm of competing with some of the top dogs if you find that synergism. It looks just small enough to pocket on the go. Do you find it so?

Yep if you find the right synergy it is an amazing player. Doesn't pair bad with anything I threw at it but the Sui pairing really left an impression on me :).

It definitely does compete up their with the alpha-dogs and kicks some squarely in the nads :P. Some still might find the X5 to be on the large side. I find it small enough to use on the go without issue. Its about the same size as my iphone4 in its otterbox case. Maybe slightly thinner but about the same form factor and weight. I don't think the player requires an amp to enjoy it at all. I found I generally preferred the low gain setting so it has more than enough power for me. Maybe with full size cans that are hard to drive you might want to consider amping it (still for some that might not be an issue). The funny thing is on most DAPs that had dedicated LOs I always defaulted to the LO and amping as I thought it sounded that much better than the HO (even for the DX100). With this player I could care less if I was using the HO or the LO. They both sound good to me.

So far, I think I prefer the Colorfly C4 as a desktop DAP.

The C4 packs features and a product page full of bells and whistles as elaborate as the X5. But the ALPS pushrod, simple - but laggy - UI, SRC, and just feel of it is very good.

The sound of the two units are quite the opposite of what one would believe. The wooden looking C4 is a lot cleaner than the metallic and industrial X5 which is a bit warmer. (NOTICE, these impressions are not set in stone, no real comparison was made. I used two different IEM's on the players)

The X5's UI can be absolutely amazing. But some imperfections in the firmware and its recognization of very fine scroll movements, along with some movement bugs in the X5 do put a damper on things. The C4 gets a free card on this one despite its laggy UI due to just how simple it is.

The X5 wins in intimidation though. I have never gotten excited from 'looking' at a unit I review. I didn't get any 'hype' from the X5 pre release or anything really. Heck, the day I got it in my door. It sat on my desk for a few hours before I decided to get off my butt. Here I am now, sitting, and every time I see the X5, it sends shivers down my neck due to just how amazing it looks and feels.

I've been over the excitment for players since the DX100 really. Well then again I was pretty excited to get the S mod so :P.

So you find the C4 to have cleaner sound than the X5? Is the C4 more detail oriented and more neutral?

Good question. I'll be doing a more formal quick impression in the next hour.

I'll be using the same IEM, and same tracks natively on both X5 and C4 for you in the next hour. I gotta get some stuff outta the way first

I was listening to two different IEM's sperately with the X5 and C4 seen below. And were listening to different songs. Therefore it wasn't a 'formal' comparison and may have errors in it.
