Not Studio levels but better than 801 or 601

I keep mine in a bag

What about the sound and comparison to Studio V?

If after the next firmware release we still cannot upgrade the X5  without burning out the battery on button pushes in a pocket, I am going to be really unhappy. Reversing a mistake to the previous firmware isn't an issue, right?

I also think that I have been forthright enough about the good aspects of the X5 to deserve a bit of cred on this issue - which is now the top vote-getting bug on your list. Some feedback would be appreciated.

Relax, take a breath.

Hi cooper,

Though the lockscreen warning in 1.1 seems like an unnecessary touch, it shouldn't contribute that much to battery drain if it's only turning on the screen now and then. There was however another issue reported by musicheaven when the 1.1 firmware heated up the player to "hot" levels and depleted the battery very quickly--all this without turning on the screen of the X5. Have you been experiencing such a problem?

I made a possible bug report here for this problem

Hi guys,

Please send me a pm if you are CURRENTLY previewing the X5 (or own the X5) and have the problem where the media library scan hangs or finishes without showing new songs. smily_headphones1.gif

I think I missed something. Can I update the firmware of my preview unit? Or should I leave it at 1.0?

Update it while you use it, and ask the guy you ship it to next if he wants 1.0 or the new update?

I would guess that is how it works?

First, it's a safe bet that the dap needs to be factory reset if you don't want to be left with the prior user's setup leftovers so I'd add to that just set it up to what you want and leave it to the other party to do the same, never assume the state prior to your review, it's safer that way.

Has anyone here heard the MA8 or MA9 DAPs from HiFi-ET (Monster Audio)?

They look like pretty serious designs, and I'm wondering how they compare to the X5 and similar priced DAPs?

Yes, it should be, shouldn't it? I can tell you that the SRH840 sounds fabulous with my Marantz SA8001 CD player. Unfortunately, the 840 doesn't seem to pair well with the Clip+.

Could be that you listen at much higher volumes than other people do. That explains a lot actually...

What do you mean? I do tend to listen at moderately high volumes (except when I've got organ music playing!:bigsmile_face:)

I find it interesting that apparently only miceblue and myself hear weaknesses in the X5's audio. We've both got young ears: he's 22 and I'm 32. Perhaps it's an example of the ways human hearing declines with age?

Best regards,

Brian

Unsure if anyone else in the X5 Tour has heard the MA8 or MA9

Could be - but the reviews so far have been too consistent.  I'm more wondering whether there is a variation in the review samples.  That would actually be more worrying .......

Keep in mind that both bcarr and miceblue are third in line in reviewing thier samples of the X5. lee730 and HK_sends have reviewed the same X5 as miceblue and gelocks has reviewed the same unit as bcarr (vitavox has heard it too but has yet to post his review).

Well that's interesting.

Because Lee and Gelocks reviews were essentially similar to mine - relatively neutral, slight warmth etc.  In fact, of the 9 posted to date 8 have said things like/including : neutral, warmish tinge, smooth, well extended, full bodied

One (musicheaven) has said airy and light with mids and highs slightly prominent / analytical but not excessive.

Then we have bcarr and miceblue.

I know at 47 (in a couple of weeks) my hearing is nowhere near perfect and I'm definitely open to the idea that it could be individual preference or even age (in my case) playing a role.  But it does still strike me as strange that the comments of frequency imbalance and sibilance are so jarringly contradicting of the majority (so far) of the reviews.  Has or can anyone (from the various outputs) measure the frequency response of the X5?  Does Fiio have measurements Joe?  This would be interesting to see - especially amid the comments regarding roll-off (which I didn't hear).

I'm really looking forward to the other reviews rolling in as well.  If it turns out I'm missing a lot sonically - then it might be time for me to hang up the reviewers boots .......

It'd be an interesting experiment if you would pass the unit back to us and see if we hear anything different. Regardless of that, there are just too many variables at play here. The only thing we can agree is to disagree and lots will be based on our personal experience with other players and music styles/genres used in the review. One thing is for sure, I did not sense anything bad or annoying about the X5 I did not like, I actually found it quite enjoyable to listen to and was able to spend hours listening to music without being tired of it with the different headphones and earphones in my possession. With all the players I own, it's rated at the top. That is just my humble opinion and it may change with the advent of other players.
