. . . I thought I was going crazy since no one else is reporting this kind of sound output.

No, miceblue, it's not just you. I'm having similar experiences with the X5 paired to my Shure SRH840 full-size headphones (44 ohms, 102 dB/mW). I know I've been spoiled with the HO of my Marantz SA8001, but my goodness--how disappointing!

Edit: miceblue, which firmware are you using? My unit arrived with version 1.1 installed; I may revert to 1.0. At present, the X5 is definitely muddy, congested, and sibilant.

Brian
I'm running 1.0 still.

But I'm pretty sure Lee loved it so... :D

The 3rd ANVs treble really isn't harsh. The second edition was more aggressive and not as smooth sounding. But I also did like that approach depending on what it was paired with. The X5 will not touch the Studio in terms of battery life. Then again nothing really does.

It does appear that the Studio is more compact, perhaps lighter and better battery life?  Also, the X5 has a dedicated amp out which you said is very clean and very much better UI.     (I may have missed the comparison earlier on)

The X5 would have a thicker sound. The overall detail levels of the 3rd ANV would be a bit higher. But the X5 really does excel in micro-details. Then again so do hisound players. Just with the thicker note weight and the black background it is really noticeable/enjoyable on the X5. Via the LO on the T1 amp it made the X5 very neutral to my ears. I'd say dead neutral, and more detail oriented overall. The HO is more musical. I enjoyed both but for my needs I'd use the HO mainly with the Flat 4. The 3rd ANV would have a wider sound staging and much more airy sounding. The X5 will have more depth to its sound.  Both have excellent mid-ranges. I'd say the 3rd ANV has more clarity in its mid range. For my needs I'd go with the X5. I sold my 3rd ANV because I wouldn't use it anymore having the AK120-S mod. I have the BA which pairs better with the SE5. But since you have warm/bassy IEMs I'm not sure if the X5 would suite your needs totally (in terms of synergy). Probably through the LO though with the T1 amp you'd be cherry.

Added Bug 45 to the Bugzilla list.

Remove Lock Screen Warning or allow us to turn it off

In FW 1.1, an unfortunate decision was made to add Lock Screen Warnings. As a result, the screen lights up when locked buttons are pushed. In a tight pocket, this will quickly expend the battery. This feature is only useful to the very newest X5 user and is a major negative for the X5 owner. At very least, there must be the option to turn this off in the settings please.

Please vote to correct this unfortunate situation.

Thanks!

Lee this has confused my tired brain - which would you say is the most detailed?

I have a Studio-V and a 3rd Anniv and am getting the X5 on tour next week

BTW I used my Nova N3 yesterday, volume aside I still REALLY rate this little DAP.

The detail is quite impressive when used with a sensitive IEM.

No good with my DT1350 and ES10 though, just not enough volume.

Jack Fu has been quiet recently.

I'd still give the nod to the Studio.

Thanks!

As i said before, i own the commercially sold version, i bought it from china. I am checking this right now, and it is not there. The locked keys do not trigger anything when locked. No screen light or anything. I have tried it on both lick modes, the one with the volume and skip key working, and the one that has all keys off. In the matter of fact even when the volume and skip keys work under that lockmode, the volume and tracks change without lighting the screen which is what you would surely appreciate

What type of files are you guys hearing this with? My understanding from the x3 reviews is that the compressed format codecs are weaker than than the lossless ones and something Fiio is working on.

Mostly either FLAC or ALAC. I have a few MP3 albums here and there.

Then you still have FW 1.0 installed. That is what I am using too since I cannot accept the lock screen warnings that are introduced in 1.1. If you upgrade to 1.1, you will see what I am talking about - and like me you may decide to switch back.

The problem is that anyone who carries the X5 in a pocket is going to be stuck on FW 1.0 forever unless they fix this. That means foregoing all other benefits from future firmware upgrades.

I trust that James and Joe will fix this.

Agree 100% Lee

In fact - if the Studio could take dual micro SD, and could boot in seconds (like the X5), it'd be all I really needed.  I was using it today (around the house) with my 250 ohm DT880, and still can't believe how good the combination sounds ......

Thanks for the warning. What i would like to see too is a lock mode where only the volume keys work. Right now, if the skip keys work too, then in the pocket due to the position of the x keys, songs skip by accident very frequently, and if i use the other lock mode, i have to unlock everytime i want to adjust the volume, which for me is very frequently

I agree 100%. So in addition to voting for Bug 45, vote for Bug 41Provide more lockscreen options.

Why is this the case, do you know?

This will be interesting. I have both Studio V and 3rd Anv. X5 coming soon. The areas X5 will need to keep up with both Studio units for me is instrument separation. This is an area I have not heard any other DAP do better than Hisound, if it falls short it becomes rather obvious to me when samples start smearing, usually mostly found in busy passages or choruses of a song when many instruments break out at the same time. One reason I sent DX50 to the never lands was due to weak separation.

Hisound players house sound is like doing surgery. If you want to listen to every nuance it will reward you. Not everyone is that into that kinda listening though ;)...
