My feeling exactly.

Lee:  For those Studio V and 3rd Anniv owners, could you comment on SQ compared to the X5?

It does appear that the Studio is more compact, perhaps lighter and better battery life?  Also, the X5 has a dedicated amp out which you said is very clean and very much better UI.     (I may have missed the comparison earlier on)

Studio V: Bass roll-off, good mids/upper-mids, harsh treble. Overall bright signature. Good battery life, UI sucks. Not recommended...

But I'm pretty sure Lee loved it so... :D

Got my 3rd anniversary sounding pretty smooth right now. Not harsh with JH13s so good to go. Does have some low bass roll but not really noticeable with the JH's (28 ohm). A bit noisier than needed but OK. UI sucks. I expect/hope that the X5 will finally surpass it in value.

Could those of you on tour who have not written reviews please do so.  I would like to see more impressions.  Writing more reviews also might make Fiio more inclined to have another tour with future products (X7).

James/Joe, when exactly the international sale of X5 will be? First part of March or rather second or even the end of March?

Stuff ships out end of March from FiiO.

bowei, thanks. that's strange - one of our local distributors claims that the units will be shiped around second part of March (and not the end of March and this does make a difference:)

Yes indeed, the only solution for some SD cards that worked well on my ak120/windows/imac but not read on X5, is to format them using the X5 itself. I did this the day before yesterday and well the X5 formats very fast, which is great, it names tbe SD cards as X5 card 1 and so on, and from then forward they play and read very well on X5, AK120, windows and macs. But i urge Fiio to address this issue on the next firmware update, cause it is not convenient for many people to format their SDs and load them again. Not to mention that SD swapping between friends will become a trend. So me and my friend on a road trip or so, i got bored from the music on my SD, i wanna use his SD, this should be easy.

Another issue i wanna raise is: i have clearly noticed how slow loading music from computers to the SDs when they are inserted into the X5, its much faster to take them out and plug them directly into the computer using the USB adapter supplied by fiio. Thats also a little inconvenient. The SDs i have inserted into my AK120 became part if the machine, i easily plug the AK120 into my imac and delete and add files as fast as a usb harddisk. I dont want to take off the X5 cover, struggle with the rubber SD lids and tke out the SD, look for my usb adaptor plug it in change an album then do the whole process to put it back into my X5. all can be avoided with a better file transfer firmware

Another firmware issue i am facing is library update: i had to format 2 of my 64g SDs as i mentioned before, and i have loaded them with music (flac mainly, some .wav with cue, some .ape ..). i run the "update library", it starts updating, stops at 1112 filed updated, and it freezes forever, i restart the machine using the force restart pin hole, as everything else does not respond. I check for music, nothing is updated, it shows no songs on albums artists, etc(i can still play the music using folders access of course). I retry the library update, it stops at 1113 sometimes or 1114, or 1112 but never did complete the update and i have to force restart every time. When i use lower capacity SDs like 8g or 4g, the library update works fine.....
Note that i am not part of a world tour demo, i am a real end user, i live and work in shenzhen china, and i purchased this officialy from Fiio, a company i really like and respect and support. So my comments here are constructive from a customer keen for enhancement

Ideally, a dap/amp should be neutral/transparent without coloring the signal path, and let the phones dictate whatever sound sig of your choice.

What's your take on AnakChan's comment " ... congestion in the trebles area that sounds overwhelming ..."?

Might pay you to actually quote AnakChan's entire quote (ie get the context right).  What he actually said was:

And what he was replying to was MiceBlue's assertion that the X5 was bright / sibilant.  AFAIK AnakChan wasn't suggesting the X5 was congested in the treble .......

In my opinion, congestion often translates into some muddiness. If there is no muddiness, I don't consider it to be congested.

Muddy sounding simply kills music enjoyment, and I am very sensitive to that.

OK I -think- I've got the nested quotations in the appropriate order. In short it's basically what Brooko said. I was proposing if congestion is what miceblue is hearing that's leading towards the description he shared in the post. I wasn't saying that the X5 is congested. To me the X5 has as smaller soundstage than the two other DAPs I have in hand (The HM-901 and the NW-ZX1) but these other DAPs I own are unusual in the perspective the ZX1 has a larger staging than the HM-901 (IMHO), and the HM-901 is like 3x the cost of the X5.

Anyway I can't see if miceblue replied whether my proposal is what he's hearing.

musicheaven, I have the same headphones (M-100 & Alpha Dogs) as miceblue and my experience is different from his.

The bright part I do not understand. The X5 tames the brightness of the Kaede. Its treble is not remotely harsh in my view.

If I say it's gotten brighter, that's bad on my part. Maybe it's more appropriate for me to say that the trebles seemed to have extended and making the X5 more tonally balanced and sits more equally in between the HM-901 & the ZX1...whereas initially after 35 hrs burn-in only, it seemed to have been closer towards the HM-901 styled signature.

. . . I thought I was going crazy since no one else is reporting this kind of sound output.

No, miceblue, it's not just you. I'm having similar experiences with the X5 paired to my Shure SRH840 full-size headphones (44 ohms, 102 dB/mW). I know I've been spoiled with the HO of my Marantz SA8001, but my goodness--how disappointing!

Edit: miceblue, which firmware are you using? My unit arrived with version 1.1 installed; I may revert to 1.0. At present, the X5 is definitely muddy, congested, and sibilant.

Regards,

Brian

I'm surprised no one has made a 'will it blend' video of the FiiO X5 yet.

I'm not sure if congested is the right sound, but some upper-midrange/lower-treble frequencies(?) just sound really harsh and lacking in dynamics. With all of my other setups, the headphones I have at hand all have a smooth upper-midrange/lower-treble frequencies(?) transition and are not fatiguing to my ears at all (even with the so-called bright O2 with the K 701).

Examples: KUNIKO's "Electric Counterpoint Version for Percussions - Movement III- Fast" song. Near the end, the instruments are being played pretty much constantly and with the X5, the dynamics of those instruments are really lacking and it just kills, quite literally, my ears. A similar observation is made with Laki Mera's "Winter (There's A Light)" song [awesome song], or Ladytron's "Destroy Everything You Touch," or the guitar notes in Fourplay's "Bali Run," or the erhu instrument in I-Ching's "Gadamaylin."
