Thanks, yes I tried rebooting and swapping the slots of the cards but the ones that do not work, they do not work consistantly and the ones that work work consistantly. So it should be a formatting issue, however how can a microSD be played on both my imac and my windows laptop and still not X5. thats a big question and drawback

I don't think this is a goods news for me. My cans (ATH-W1000, ATH-ESW11LTD, Martin Logan Mikros 90, ATH-W5000 (just ordered)), are all in the bright side. And I found that it pair well with X3, except for I like to have a better details.

I test ESW11LTD with AK120, this combination is too bright for my taste

I also try 901, really appreciate, except for it has  a little bit too warm and a bit too much body, but details are very goods and have a lush sound that I love.

So, regarding your comment, I may have to cancel my pre-order and test it first. If it do sound bright, that will be absolutely bad news, since I have to pay much more for 901 with balance card

Thanks for info!

I fully agree that E12 ( the new direction of Fiio of trying to be less warm and more flat) is reproduced in the X5. It is not bright, but it allows the cans to deliver their own signature. your Cans would sound lovely on stuff like ibasso where warmth is a signature. As for AK120, I love how it colors based on the protable amp you mate with (it sounded very warm with certain setups on my headstage arrow). If you still have the 901 or 801/802 then I suggest you contact hifiman and they will recommen the best amp card for you, meaning the warmest

I didn't provide any sort of feedback beforehand on how it sounded, so the impressions weren't biased from my impressions. In short: the sub-bass is somewhat rolled-off, mid-bass bumped up, upper-midrange forward and a bit aggressive, midrange as a whole is congested, highest frequencies are rolled off.

I double-checked the settings and the X5 is in low-gain mode and on "Normal" EQ. I actually breathed a sigh of relief after hearing the impressions because I thought I was going crazy since no one else is reporting this kind of sound output.

As for my usual setup:

Home rig: MacBook -> Audirvana Plus -> Objective DAC [or JDS Labs C5D] -> Objective 2 (with AC power) -> AKG K 701 or Alpha Dog for as long as I still have the touring unit

Or MacBook -> Audirvana Plus -> Objective DAC -> STAX SRM-252S (with step-down transformer) -> STAX SR-207

Portable rig: iPod 5G [or iPhone 4S when the iPod battery dies] -> FiiO L9 -> JDS Labs C5/C5D -> V-MODA Crossfade M-100

So you prefer your own portable rig (ipod 5g + C5)?  BTW, is your ipod 5g a diymod?
For overall ease of use, sound experience, and form factor, I would say yes I prefer the iPod/C5 combo.

Mine's just a regular 'ol, stock iPod with Rockbox installed.

I'm just a lazy guy and want simple setup, just player direct to phones, no additional amp.

This is the reason why I order W5000 instead of LCD 2 rev2, because W5000 is much more easy to drive with decent DAP.

If X5 is too bright with my cans, I may consider another route, HM901 or a small desktop amp that has warm and good detail connect to line out from X3

Edit: Thanks for your advice.

Form factor? Wouldn't it be bulkier and heavier?

Heavier yeah I think so. I have small hands and the wide X5 doesn't work out for me so well. The C5 is about the same width of the iPod and the iPod is much easier for me to hold (which is also one of the reasons why I don't have one of those super large Android phones XD).

I guess that also gave away which design I'm rooting for in the X1 thread.

For those having issues with the hidden files on a Mac, this piece of software works well:

http://www011.upp.so-net.ne.jp/decafish/EjectForWindows/EjectForWindowsE.html

You just drop the drive icon on it, and it cleans up all the hidden files and ejects the drive for you.

It's certainly going to be a major issue for you most of the recent daps seem to relatively large compare to iPods. The only one I am thinking to be of reasonable size is the DX50 and DX90 to come.

This thread has taken an interesting turn. Suddenly the X5 is bright. Who knew?

I see. I guess everyone has different preferences; I for one, like a wider device like the Samsung phones because I have rather big hands.

The X5 being bright is a complete surprise to me.

I don't have the largest hands but the X5 is fine with me.  I do have one of those large android phones so maybe thats why.

I know and with us listening to "the King of bright" IEMs and finding the unit to bring balanced to them is quite intriguing :).

I'm glad the rest of you are chiming in. Seriously, one guy says it's bright and the suddenly this becomes fact.
