Woaaah, the amp section makes all the difference! I switched to the line out connection, hooked it up to the JDS Labs C5D and all my issues are gone.

Rock on!

Trying the X5 with my M-100 now. No sibilance issues. The AD's are definitely "crispier" but not sibilant to my ears.
Right, I don't think it's sibilance per se. The X5's amp section sounds kind of like the E12 to me: bright/fatiguing and centered in the soundstage.

I wonder if it's congestion in the trebles area that sounds overwhelming and therefore bright/fatiguing?

And this is in contrast to your other listening sources?

The X5 is not a bright source with any of my iems. It is slightly brighter than the 901 but darker than the ZX1...and closer to 901 IMO.

would you still say with all of these daps in your posession that the hm901 is still the dap of choice if all you want is sound quality?

Yes. Unless you like spaciousness above all else, than ZX1. Unless you like natural sound above all else, than Tera. But for a good balance of all sound qualities, coupled with great power and authority, 901 is king. Of course, X5 is much better than all of the above in quality price ratio.

I demo dx100 before and i think it is on par and smoother than hm901 balance card. Still a legend if you value SQ over all else.

Guys are those findings with the source you quoted only, what about other phones/iems?

I'm delighted to say that I've got the X5! Unfortunately, I won't have time to post impressions until tomorrow. :( Oh, well . . .

Hmm never heard the X5 to sound fatiguing or hash. It's anything but that and sounds nothing like the E12 I had going from memory (IMO though). The E12 was more on the fatiguing side I'd say. I don't think the E12 is as good of a quality amp as the X5 to be honest. The E12 was more so power and not so much finesse.

I haven't heard the E12 so can't say anything about it but I found the X5 amp to be very good, to me it sounded as if someone described a totally different player.
Basically any phones and iems I used were far from being bright and/or fatiguing.

I just got back from an Audio Club meet/mini-meet and with the Audio Technica ATH something (I don't remember the exact model name, but it's one of the in-ear earphones) and the owner came to a similar sonic conclusion as me.

I didn't provide any sort of feedback beforehand on how it sounded, so the impressions weren't biased from my impressions. In short: the sub-bass is somewhat rolled-off, mid-bass bumped up, upper-midrange forward and a bit aggressive, midrange as a whole is congested, highest frequencies are rolled off.

I double-checked the settings and the X5 is in low-gain mode and on "Normal" EQ. I actually breathed a sigh of relief after hearing the impressions because I thought I was going crazy since no one else is reporting this kind of sound output.

As for my usual setup:
Home rig: MacBook -> Audirvana Plus -> Objective DAC [or JDS Labs C5D] -> Objective 2 (with AC power) -> AKG K 701 or Alpha Dog for as long as I still have the touring unit

Or MacBook -> Audirvana Plus -> Objective DAC -> STAX SRM-252S (with step-down transformer) -> STAX SR-207

Portable rig: iPod 5G [or iPhone 4S when the iPod battery dies] -> FiiO L9 -> JDS Labs C5/C5D -> V-MODA Crossfade M-100

So you prefer your own portable rig (ipod 5g + C5)?  BTW, is your ipod 5g a diymod?

I will try to reformat the ones that did not play and make sure they are fat32, however I havejust remembered that the ones the did not play were loaded using my iMac, and now I tried them on my Windows laptop here at work and they can read and copy and past normally to the windows, which means they are FAt32 formatted.. I wonder. I will format them tonight and check again
