Maybe they sounded fatiguing because you were listening on the bus and the low frequencies got drowned out?
That could be a possibility, except I listen to my portable rig all the time, at least twice a week day, and I usually don't have this observation.

Woaaah, the amp section makes all the difference! I switched to the line out connection, hooked it up to the JDS Labs C5D and all my issues are gone.
Rock on!

The X5 is smoother and less bright and peaky than the DX50 - but this is true comparing the X5 to many players including the iPod Classic.

Is this with the latest firmware for the DX50 that everyone is raving about?

Nevermind. You are using the latest. Sorry I missed the last few pages for some reason.

I hope that a FW update deals with the tagging. I can't get my music to play very long because the X5 is recognizing two of each song. A 01 and a _01 and so on. So after a while, it stops playing saying that the song is not a recognized format. All of my music is this way and it plays on the the HM901, all the iBasso stuff and the X3. and a couple of other so it must be a glitch, I would assume. I use a Mac computer and as mentioned by another poster earlier, it could be the way my computer transfers the songs to the card but it has never been an issue before.

The ._ files are hidden files created by Mac OS, no?
When playing it in file browsing mode, the X5 pauses for about 3 seconds to show the message that it can't play the file and moves on to the next song.

My X5 stops after a while and until I go back in to the album, will play no further. And yes, until it finally stops, there is a pause.

The X5 looks really interesting. The form factor appeals, but sound quality is most important.

Has anybody had a chance to compare the sound quality of the Fiio X5 with that of the Fiio E18? I currently run the E18 with a Galaxy Note 3, which is a little cumbersome.

Cheers

I am not sure if this happened to anyone: i remove the micro SDs that are playing well from the AK120 and put them on X5 and it says : no music was found. I have 5 micro SDs and so far only 2 worked. Any advice?

Depends on the file format of your card as x5 supports fat32 and ntfs

Yes its definitely a mac thing. Google 'show hidden files mac' and it will allow you to see the extraneous files on your card in finder. Delete them, and all should be fine.

I have 12 edit: 14 cards with music, I don't want to go through each one and delete it. They play fine on everything else so I would imagine it is just a FW fix as there are other Mac users. If this was with iBasso, Hifiman or anyone else I would ask them the same if my cards played on everyone else player. Just a small thing that I am sure will get fixed.

Have you tried re-booting the X5 and re-inserting the microSD cards multiple times? My card failed to read a few times but re-booting the X5 or re-inserting the card seemed to work.

Yeah going through each folder to remove ._ files is a pain in the butt. I'm sure there's a Terminal command that does that with the rm command, but I'm not one to ask about that kind of stuff and preliminary Google searching didn't really help.

I still own it. The X5 does improve through the Stepdance but I was surprised how similar the sound is to the X5 internal amp. They are both 'neutral but slightly on the thick and lush' side. I prefer amping the X5 through the Pico Power. It opens up the sound.

I think I had too much fun un-amping the X5 and completely forgot about it until I lined up my amps and gave it another shot. You should try amping each through the Pico Power and report, I would really like to know if I was dreaming about it.

I really like the combination of the X5 and the Pico Power. I have used it a lot in USB DAC mode.

Trying the X5 with my M-100 now. No sibilance issues. The AD's are definitely "crispier" but not sibilant to my ears.

Do you mean that the m100s sounds better paired to the X5 than the ADs?
