you never tried the 1.28? I think that improved it quite some bit, seems to garner alot of praise. I like my dx50 after the upgrade

Sorry. You are right. I meant 1.2.8. It is very good. I just like the X5 more, especially as a standalone DAP.

is that so? I can't really wait to hear the X5 this saturday then , I would be doing an extremely late mini review about it

Thanks. I'm using mp3tag (sort on filename handy!) to weed out any tracks in my collection without a preceding number.

Those that are numbered:  8,9,10,11   - will they work correctly or must the be 08, 09, 10 11?

Difficult to say but I don't recommend changing number lengths. I have two huge colections: Hits of the '70s (700 songs) and Bacobens Top Rock 500. They both are numbered with three digits starting at 001. That is the correct way to go. Again, do it once and never look back.

For most albums of course you start with 01.

cooperpwc, did you already post your review on X5? If not, can you make a quick comparison to dx50?

No, I paid for my X5 so that allows me to be lazy and not post a review. My thoughts have been dispersed scattershot over the two X5 threads.

The X5 is the first DAP that I have really enjoyed as standalone player. By comparison, I find the sound of the DX50 headphone out to be thin with the Heaven VI. It lacks the presence and impact of the X5. I find that the DX50 is just begging to be amped.

The X5 is smoother and less bright and peaky than the DX50 - but this is true comparing the X5 to many players including the iPod Classic.

I am afraid that I have not spent the time necessary to do a proper comparison of the line out of the X5 and the line out of the DX50. I am really enjoying the X5 as standalone player - I feel freed from my stack shackles - so I don't have much incentive to make a comparison. I suppose that I should.

I do however very much enjoy the X5 line out through the Pico Power when used at home as a USB DAC.

Allow me to say one nice thing about the DX50. It is much faster and requires far less effort to scroll through a long list of artists or songs. Rotating the X5 wheel to go down a long list can be work at times.

I think you got yourself in a pickle! wink.gif

^ Sorry I don't understand.

Edit: Oh, I think you mean that I am stuck cranking that wheel because I like the X5. True. It's no biggie though.  :-)

Sorry my bad, it's an idiom

"If you are in a pickle, you are in a difficult position, or have a problem to which no easy answer can be found."

It's an icy situation to compare two players with very different hardware, UI and sound signature.

I know the idiom. I just wasn't sure which pickle you thought I was in.

I always do that agreed, it's just the albums I have acquired that are not using the correct way. Too many to change if not needed.

Didn't you own the Meier Audio Stepdance? And if so, is the X5 LOD > Stepdance better than the X5 alone?

I Have to say my experience has been very similar to yours except I got a big surprise amping the X5. If you amp both players, the DX50 seems to sound better than the X5 amped to the same source. In fact I thought the X5 sounded a tad too bright which was a big shock to me. I think I had too much fun un-amping the X5 and completely forgot about it until I lined up my amps and gave it another shot. You should try amping each through the Pico Power and report, I would really like to know if I was dreaming about it.
