Looking for new Full Sized headphones - Page 2

These two are even closer on paper, but they don't sound the same.

Here are all four:

I suppose the HD558 mod is reducing the treble between 1.5 kHz and 4.5 kHz.

@Claritas, funny how FR graphs doesn't always tell the whole story. What is the difference between the AKG K701 vs. Sennheiser 598 in your opinion?

K702 is the more open sounding, has a much larger soundstage, is considerably more resolving, and is (unfortunately) brighter, but I'm willing to make that trade-off for orchestral music.

Not to hijack the thread but how do you make those graphs?

headroom.com allows you to compare up to 4 headphones on their FR graphs.

Note: it almost always makes sense to set the amplitude to the 15dB range instead of 30dB in order to see and show the differences more clearly.

So from what you guys have said  i am mainly looking at the 598s and the AKG K550. I will being using a line converter from my HTC One using extreme quality on Spotify to my Fiio E11, to either of the headphones. So it seems that the K550 has a better overall sound stage, just not as bass heavy as the 598s. So if im looking for the better sound stage, can I EQ the K550s to make them have more bass?

And I may be able to get a better amp, so if I do which headphone would benefit most from it?

The K550s are closed headphones, while the HD598s are open. So the HD598s will have the better soundstage.

While open headphones usually have better soundstage vs closed, that may not be necessarily true for the K550 has I have read that their sound stage rivals some open headphones. Perhaps someone who as directly A-Bed those two headphones can shed some light on the issue. When I had the K550, I didn't get a chance to compare them against any open headphones, but their sound stage easily beat all the closed headphones I've tried.

However, for OP's purposes it seems like the HD 598 would be more suitable for him as it is currently sub-$200 while the cheapest K550 I've found right now is $210.

I haven't tried K550 yet, but based on their specs, they should be about the same.

I agree with Jeremy. I like the AKG house sound, but between a good open model and a good closed model, "open beats closed." So if you don't need a closed model, I recommend buying HD598 instead.

So you guys think the 598s sound better? I've read a lot of reviews saying the AKGs sound better. If someone could clarify this for me I would greatly appreciate it. I cant make a decision between the two.

I would suggest going to a best buy w/ a magnolia section & demoing the AKG sound to see if you like it! the 598 is a bit older, so I am not sure if there is anywhere you can go demo them.

It's hard to really know the headphones based on reviews as everyone has different tastes & sound preferences. you will need to find a comparison review between the two headphones and you have to keep in mind that everyone is biased towards certain sound signatures (so look at the reviewers background/music preferences). just a quick search on these forums I found these two promising links:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/689007/home-headphones-akg-k550-vs-hd598-vs-hd558

http://www.head-fi.org/t/638745/sennheiser-hd598-vs-akg-k550

Take all reviews & opinions w/ a grain of salt though. Someone else's preferences be the best suited for you. I don't think you can really go wrong w/ either choice tho, so don't worry. :normal_smile : cheers & good luck

PS: I vote AKG! hahaha. if you can stretch your budget to get the open K701, I don't think you'll be disappointed. However, both the 598 & K550 seem like solid choices at the $200ish mark.

The AKG that I heard (K701) was too analytical. It would be great for acoustic and recordings, but not everyday listening. The Sennheiser HD5XX range is still relatively neutral but great for everyday uses. It is what got me hooked on headphones.
