Are we there yet?

I have been satisfied with my music listening experience since the introduction of CD; and,. despite marketers and audiophile rag writers promising a better experience with the latest two dollar DAC screwed into a thousand dollar metal box with milled aluminum plate facia, the only thing today's technology has brought me for sure is more convenience. I can now buy my music on line and listen to it shortly thereafter without having to get up from my sofa. This makes me wonder, are we there yet?

I think we will "arrive" when all music in existence can be streamed lossless, direct to a dedicated DAC without an added PC and junk. Then you just control from a portable device and have the option to push it to your HDTV. Included will also be DSP correction for your particular ears, so you can get perfect sound all the time, and mimic $100k+ systems. That will be when "we are there" IMO :D

heh... i like this. I got my DAC really cheap from stoner acoustics. It's sad how DAC prices get so inflated. the chip inside is dirt cheap.

I would say we are here already. we can get planar magnetic headphones as cheaply as $300 nowadays. the only advancements will be in convenience of bringing hi-fi to wireless systems.

Right now, I am trying to find a better DAC than my Peachtree DacIt, which can be had for bargain prices. It sounds better than a number of other DAC's I've tried, it has had perfect compatibility with just about every amp/tube/headphone I've hooked up to it (different combos sound different, but all sound GOOD), it's puny enough to unassumingly hide on my desk at work and I am literally swimming in the music, with none of that harsh digital edge we all hate. Best $300 spent, possibly ever.

We're there, but everyone needs to find that perfect starting point. I found mine. Building around it is going to be fun. Can't wait to be feeding it an SR-009/Blue Hawaii one day. :)
