Looking for headphones for my nephew, football player

I have a nephew (13yrs old) who has been playing football for several years now and he's looking for a set of headphones he can use while warming up, working out, etc.

He's thinking about getting a set of Beats, but I've heard in the past Beats are not very good for anything other than rap. He wants something that not only sounds good, but looks good and offers some noise damping as well. Budget is $350 or less.

What would you suggest?

Go with Beats then?

Wouldn't he be better with in-ears if he's using them for exercise? I'd think they'd be less likely to come off.

You might be right but over the ears is what he's wanting. He did mention the monster fan's too, are they any good?

I can't say I'm familiar with them, but generally as a brand monster are way overpriced.

I'd advise against going for the Beats. They're not BAD cans, but they're incredibly overpriced for what you get. You're paying for the name, not the headphones. If you're looking for sound quality, I'd look elsewhere.

My personal recommendation would be the Audio Technica M50s. They're widely regarded as being a great starter pair of hifi headphones. They're comfortable, durable, and have pretty nice isolation. They've got a nice build quality and clamp pretty well, so they won't fall off or break any time soon. They're studio monitors, so the music will sound like it was intended to. These cans also have some very nice bass to them. It's much better than the Beats fake EQ'd bass. Anyone on these forums will tell you that these are MUCH better than Beats Pros.

They're only about $100, and your nephew won't be disappointed smily_headphones1.gif

Edit: Can't forget the looks, now can we?

Thanks for the recommendation Physicist, I'll pass along the info. I was just about to email him anyways because I did find NewEgg.com has Beats on sale for $179.

get the beats. they are for your nephew. he wants style & brand-name. anything else, he would probably be a little bit disappointed.

while there are many cheaper alternatives with much better sound quality, when you are getting a gift you have to consider the receipt. hes a 13 year old kid, probably couldn't care less for audiophile-grade headphones & wants something that his friends think is cool.

I remember when I was 13 my mom got me a dell dj mp3 player instead of an ipod & i was a bit sad hahaha. even tho the dell dj is way better performance:price-wise.

Definitely get the Beats. At that age, it's more form over function. And if he starts appreciating music as he gets older, then that is the time to turn him to real headphones.

I'm 13 and I can't stand the Beats (although I've been into audiophile stuff since I was 7 and I have no friends), if he wants good sound quality and looks get him the Shure SRH750DJ.

For good-looking audiophile headphones (all cheaper than beats), here are my votes:

1.) $200 AKG K545 from razerdogaudio - black/(turquoise/orange/gold) vs white/turquoise

2. Sony MDR-1R (red/black - can be found sub-200; like $180)

3.) Sennheiser On-ear (black/red) $230 at razerdogaudio

4.) Logitech UE6000 (white - $100)

5.) Sony MDR-10R ($150 - white)

damnn sexyy... headphone p0rn =P
