I just put together my first serious (well, serious for ME!) headphone system. It consists of the following components:
standard iTunes library--->
MacMini (upgraded RAM to 16GB, but has spinner drive- no SSD) with external WD "green" 1TB spinner drive -->
Toslink out on Mini 'phone jack--->
California Audio Labs SIGMA (NOS) DAC (cap job, excellent RCA 12AT7 variant tube)--->
Vampire CCC I/C's--->
Bottlehead Crack (stock everything including stock tubes, and no speedball)--->
This is a pretty good sounding set-up, but I want for more. I've heard a LOT better out of my previous speaker based systems, so I know there is some lacking here and there. Thing is, I don't know where to focus my effort and money. I could use some advice.
Upgrades I'm considering are as follows:
-improved software (Amarra, etc)
-solid state drive…internal/external, or both!
-Audiophilleo 1/2 (USB to SPDIF converter)
-Crack speedball upgrade, as well as upgrades to the power supply, and Definitely some better tubes (recommendations?)
Two things that are staying put are the T1's and my trusty CAL Sigma DAC.
I'd like to know what you would do next and why. I might end up doing ALL these things in time, but looking for the best sonic ROI at the moment. All suggestions welcomed!!
