DAC/AMP for HD650 and ATH-M50?

Hey all,

I need some advice on what to buy if anything at all.

So I don't really have any experience in this field at all or much knowledge at all, but I've got a pair of HD650 that I bought a couple years ago and never really used them. I used them last week just by plugging them into my motherboard and was underwhelmed. Me being stupid, ordered a pair of ATH-M50 thinking they would be better and satisfy me, but apparently it was a downgrade. So now I have two headsets with no good results and after asking around a bit and researching, I've come to the conclusion that I might need to buy something again....an Ampifier or DAC for my desktop so that the audio is 'better'.

I've looked at videos and threads and apparently the Fiio E9 are pretty good for the M50s I believe. To be honest, I have no idea what they actually do but I'm just forming opinions off threads and videos. Is this a good AMP/DAC for my two headsets? Also, I saw that there's also an E7/E17 model which are the same (I think?) that do the same but are portable. What is the point of using both of them? (E7/17 docked into the E9)

Also, what is the difference between getting one of these external Amplifiers to getting a soundcard?

Any suggestions or just comments to help clear things up would be appreciated since I am a bit lost

By reputation, the 300-Ohm HD650 gets better with better amping, so the more your willing to spend, the better the HD650s should sound.

The 50-Ohm ATH-M50s really only need a low cost simple headphone amplifier, anymore then that does not really help that much.

Reading up and asking on this thread would be a good place to find out what amplifiers work well with the HD650 (the ATH-M50 are not something you have to factor in).
