Help With First Real Headphones!

Hey guys, I've eyed this forum for a while now, and I've finally joined :P

So yeah. I'm 14, and I really want new headphones for Christmas. I first bought the Samson SR850's 3 years ago now, and I loved them. At first they were pretty iffy, but after a month or so they sounded great. At the time I didn't know what it meant to burn in headphones, now I know, haha. I rocked those for a while, but I couldn't really wear them in public, you look ridiculous, so I invested in some $20 Audio Technica earbuds. However, earbuds tend to hurt my ears, so I've moved away from those. So now, onto High School. As I've mentioned before, I love music, so I would occasionally bring my SR850's to school for study halls and whatnot. For starters, being a Semi-Open design made them leak a ton (awkward). And secondly, I got made fun of because they're quite frankly.... ugly. So yeah. I need good sounding headphones that look good. Anyways, it's finally nearing Christmas, and I can get a good pair of headphones for the first time!

I listen to all genres of music however, mostly Classic Rock, Electronica, Some Classical, Synthpop, Reggae, and some House.

So far I've been eyeing the

Audio Technica ATH-M50 (White)

Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro's (White again)

Sennheiser HD 280 Pro

Sennheiser HD 598

Price Range: $50-$180

Right now my main competitors are the M50's, Custom One's, or the 598's.

So yeah! Thank you guys a Ton! If you have any suggestions, PLEASE leave them below! Happy holidays!

If you want awesome clarity ,sizzling treble, spacious soundstage and average lows, then go for the 598

If you want a balanced all rounder headphone, then go for the HD 558.

If you want superb lows, decent clarity , good high and a decent soundstage, then go for the HD 518.

If you want an extremely good deep bass, metallic highs and don't mind the narrow soundstage, then go for the M50's.

If you want more accuracy, details and clean sounding headphones, something flat sounding with added warmth + a very good soundstage, then go for the shure SRH 840

All these above headphones are extremely good, pick one of them and you won't be disappointed.

Gosh, If you had to choose between the 558 vs 598, what would you take?

Save money impress your friends scare hell out of your enemies. Pick up a pair of Koss KSC75's and throw any kind of headband on em. 10 dollar outlay which will give you a decent reference as to sound sig, clarity and response. Once you are attuned to listening through them it will make judging other phones a much easier task.

FWIW I owned the senni 280's and impressive they were not.

I would take the 558, save some money and buy an amp (fiio E11) with that money . HD 598 is slightly better than the 558, but they are costlier.

Are they really that good? I've seen positive reviews, but I'm iffy.

i owned the 558 and they sound good, but are a little lacking in bass.

doing the foam mod helps though.

The bass is decent. If you wanted more bass, should have gone for the HD 518.

Hmmmmm.

HD 558:

Pro:

In Black

Cheaper

Con:

Less comfortable

poorer sound quality than 598's

Less bass apparently

HD 598:

Pro:

Better Sound quality

More comfortable

Classier Materials ;D

Larger Sound stage

Con:

"Different" Look

More Expensive

NOTE:

My uncle always gives me like $50 amazon gift cards for christmas, so if I got the 598's for christmas, I could use the gift card to buy an amp.

P.P.S. I sure as hell am not doing the foam mod thing, Me+Unscrewing Things = No. Everytime I take something apart I break it, my old ipod, laptop, phone, etc. Lol, yet I still build computers well

i don't think the bass is that good on them, and i owned them.

when they are stock their bass is a little lacking, then when you do the foam mod their bass becomes pretty neutral.

everything else about them is good at their price point, and they are great for movies.
