Not counting price as a concern, what are the best audiophile grade headphones that will perform very well whilst being powered by an ipod or phone?

Top of my head answer: one of the more expensive low impedance Beyerdynamics.

How well would the Sennheiser 558 cans perform with an ipod? Would their performance be limited?

An iPod should be able to drive the 50-Ohm HD558 headphones.

It would be a good idea to spend $16-$20 for a replacement cable that comes standard with a 3.5mm plug.

If price isn't an issue you can do a lot better than the 558 and this is coming from a 598 owner. I'd suggest browsing the Portable Headphones forum and look into CIEM's. I just ordered the Noble K10 which I've read many good reviews on. The JH Audio Roxanne is another flagship CIEM I'd look into.

If you want more bass, then check out the HD 518. It has more bass than any 5xx series headphone. 518, 558 and 598  have kinda similar sound. check out the graphs. the only difference is the 518 has more bass, the 558 is an all rounder and the 598 has a very good upper range.

So If you are a bass fan(not extreme bass head), then go for the 518 eyes closed or else check out the other two.

I went and looked around AKG's website. Does anyone know of a review of the K845 headphones?

I don't know if it's actually been released yet. It was supposed to go on sale some time in November, but all I can find are spec sheets.
