Midcentric, better yet- vocal centric, with a rawness and edge. Polite, non-fatiguing but weighty treble. Excellent bass quantity- this is not your typical consumer bass heavy sig- rather it's tight, textured, quick and nimble.
Layering is superb. Vocals are lifted and presented on a platter before the feast. Drums are nicely separated from guitars- The head space is not dramatically wide but has great proportions; most importantly fantastic height that is often missing in many well performing iems. Depth is simply top tier.
Bass texture is really great; No excessive decay. I'm hearing very good sub bass that starts it's roll under 40hz.
Treble has a nice solidity, weight and timbre, yet soft and always polite. I would prefer a bit more presence and sparkle but it works well with the overall signature.
The midrange is the show. Vocals are front and center with great intimacy. The vocalists are thrust upon you with grit and emotion. Backing vocals are more intelligible than ever before; similarly lifted and thrust forward. You can't accuse the a Rockets of not being engaging. Guitars are big and bold. Occasionally, with some songs, the mids can get a bit domineering at louder volumes but overall sound great at any volume and I'm continuing to get used to their presentation. I feel the Rockets really shine at moderate to lower volumes though.
Instrument timbre is very good, especially strings. Acoustic guitar is fantastic and drums, especially the kicks, are pretty spectacular. I've heard better distortion guitar bite but the Rockets add a pretty unique rawness for a not too common flavor.
The above was straight from my iPhone 5S. Haven't had a chance to use the AK240 with the a Rockets yet. From memory of the prototype, they should really scale with an amp. They sounded awesome from the Violectric stack Dale had at the time (too bad I sold mine). The Rockets did sound better after an hour or two than right out of the pouch.
These things are seriously tiny. Stock tips are really good but I'm really liking mh1 tips for the ability to get them deeper. The cable might just be the best stock cable I've ever seen. I feel like it would come in handy for MacGyver. Looking forward to the anti-loops for over the ear wear, as the cable sticks out a bit, but eliminates cable noise and is my preferred method of wear.
