What headphones would be an upgrade? (Already have HD280, HD25-1, MDR7506)

Hi everyone!

I currently own the Sennheiser HD280s, Sennheiser HD25-1 IIs, and the Sony MDR 7506. I've been looking to get a new pair of headphones recently after I saw the AT M50s on sale; but I decided that the M50s wouldn't be significant enough an upgrade to what I already have to justify the purchase.

I'm looking for a pair of relatively flat, general purpose headphones. Bass is great and all, but I don't need more than what was intended to be heard - IMO accuracy/neutrality is king. I listen to a little bit of everything - orchestral soundtracks, standard pop/rock/alternative, and I've been getting into EDM recently. The headphones would be used for both general listening and music production (tracking, mixing). Because they'd be used outside as well, I'm leaning toward closed cans.

I've been looking at the AKG K550s as my primary candidate - would these be a significant enough upgrade from the cans I already have to justify my purchase? Do you guys have any other suggestions? Thanks!

While K550 is good, you should consider open cans in general. Open ones usually have better performance-per-dollar ratio. Stuffs like HD598 would be considerable upgrade from your closed cans.

I've looked at open cans, but I prefer the isolation (both coming in and going out) that closed cans provide in public and noisy environments. =\ But one day.
