DT 880 Headphone Amp - Schiit Magni or Modi or both?

For the last few months I have been using DT 880 pro headphones and I use them while listing to music off my mac book pro and recording guitar through my scarlett 2i2 audio interface.

I really don't know much about headphone amplifiers and I do not want to spend more than $200.

Right now I am looking at the Magni which I hear is good "Schiit" plus it's only $100 which is great. While researching I have also come across the Schiit Modi usb dac. So what I am wondering is do I need both to power it through my lab top or will the Magni be enough. I guess I just don't really understand the difference between an amp and a dac.

Sorry if I am a bit of a noob, but any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks

The Modi DAC is a Digital to Analog Converter, there is a DAC chip in your Macbook Pro (but I would guess not as good as the Modi).

The Magni headphone amplifier is designed to provide power to to headphones (I would assume better then the Macbook Pro).

You Scarlett acts like a DAC and amp. combined, but i would assume not as good as a Magni/Modi combo

You really can not use the Modi and the Scarlett at the same time and I guess you need the Scarlett for recording.

So it might be best just to only get the Magni amp and plug it into the TRS outputs (one or both?) on the back of the Scarlett.

Cool, thanks for that.

One more question if you don't mind, will the magni amplifier also improve overall sound quality or is it mainly used to increase power? Or does improved sound quality come from the dac?

The Magni should be a better quality headphone amplifier and provide more power.

So you should see an increase in sound quality. But as I know nothing really about the Scarlett (and can only guess), I can't provide a 100% guarantee.

The DAC chip in the Modi "should" be better then the DAC chip in the Scarlett (best guess).

As there is no listing of the hardware and chips inside the Scarlett, it's all guessing.

But to me (personally) it would make sense that you should seem some sort of improvement.

I probably wont be using my scarlett 2i2 as a dac outside of recording. I would expect you are right about the Modi being a better dac though.

Now, I get relatively decent volume out of my macbook pro, so I'm looking more for just overall sound quality. Considering that, which would you choose? Magni or Modi?

Cheers

You have to get the Magni first, as the Modi can not be used on it's own for driving headphones.

Oh gotcha.

Guess that makes my decision easy then.

Thanks for all the help, mate! :)
