How many headphones are too many? - Page 4

I think if you need a four-wheel trailer to carry your phones to the meet, that may be considered excessive. If you can put them all in a single SUV, this would be about right amount for me.

2 headphones is too much, because you can only use 1 pair of headphone which makes the other headphone redundant.

That depends on how you buy it tongue.gif if you buy two headphone of the same signature but one will sound better than the other, of course you will stick with the better ones. However, if you buy two of different sig or one is open while the other is closed, you will see yourself using both at different situation smily_headphones1.gif

Until you can't answer the question:

'Which pair do I listen to now?'

Based on that logic, you only need one pair of trousers and one pair of shoes, because you can only wear one at a time.

Welcome to Mono-fi, sorry about your restricted life.

LOOOL! I only wash my one and only underwear whenever I take a shower to save some money on the water bill too.

Mono-fi tip:

Wear them inside out every second day and go outside when it rains.

PS: Do not do the above wearing your only headphone, if it gets wet and shorts out, you are up a creek without a paddle.

Let's logically break this down.

Smaller directly on ears :

1 open

1 closed

1 semi open

Larger padded on ears just bordering over ears

1 open

1 closed

1 semi open

Around ears

1 open

1 closed

1 semi open

IEMs

1 BA or dual BA driver

1 hybrid driver

1 dynamic driver

so that's 12 so far

For the sake of this discussion these are all Dynamic except the IEMS you are going to want need to explore the same number of styles in Orthodynamics so double the previous number.

 So 9 more = 21

Now we need to explore the Electrostatic possibilites, so say add in roughly 4 which encompasses In Ears portable, Electrets, Fullsized, and fullsized portables.

= 25

Consider that some are probably rare and/or you find a screaming deal and/or one or two break so you get a  double backup or two.  maybe 5.

= 30

You find there's some new IEMS that peak your interest since the old ones aren't doing it for you with a particular new source or you broke/snagged one or other. Also the increasing bang for buck aspect in IEMs has you hooked. Say add 6 more in.

= 36

You now factor in that people know what is easy to get you for a gift, or you see something nutso cheap at a garage sale or thrift shop.

Maybe 5 more.

= 41

Now onto customs and modding. That housing would be perfect for those spare drivers you had lying around, add in at least 5 more

=46

THEREFORE the ideal head-fier will gradually accumulate a MINIMUM of 46 headphones.

Seems like a lot ....but take a group of 6 and put them jumbled together...it's only really  around 8 groups of the small pile there.:beerchug:

And I didn't even mention the various tunings / signatures in all that LOGICAL breakdown either, so , yeah add a few more.

50 plus seems like a logical amount

I'm still confussed by the original question.

Shouldn't it read:

How much headphones is too many?

Nope. "how many" is grammatically correct in this case.

much goes with the singular - eg - how much pie is too much?

many goes with the plural -  eg - how many pies are too many?

I was taking the piss.

It should actually read:

How many headphones is too many?  Not "How many headphones is too much?"

But thanks for grammar lesson.

Obviously, as we all know, you can only listen to ONE headphone at a time. Therefore, owning LOTS of them is expensive and doesn't change the fact of the first statement. Finding a few headphones I really enjoy has been the key to me being happy and not entirely (just somewhat) broke.

Once I owned 4+, I knew some had to go. It's just too expensive to keep them sitting around not being used.

For me, I think 2-3 premium quality headphones, a good IEM and a great DAC/AMP is near the sweet spot.

Read the title again, GREQ, it says, "headphones". :)
