I would recommend the 8320 headphones from Monoprice. They are less than $30 shipped and sound amazing for the price so I think they would be great for your first foray into higher quality portable audio.

Audio Technica M50s, V-moda M0s, Creative Aurvana Lives are all great choices for your genres and can all be driven fine out of your iphone.

lol... The primary purpose of headphones are for listening to music, it's redundant to state that. All headphones are geared for music except dedicated gaming headsets which are basically disregarded at head-fi. For gaming, it's just about soundstage. If the headphones are good for music, they be good for movies lol. Usually when asking for recs here, you say for a specific genre. I guess you didn't see the humor of absurb repetition. :P
