Cheaper alternative to the ATH-M50s?

I've been reading that the ATH-M50's have been surpassed in quality and even at a lower price.  Is this true, and if so, which pair would you say does such a thing?

Hi,

I must admit I don't really like those sorts of claims, or at least I never take them seriously. The best you can do is to try a few similar headphones by your own and draw your personal conclusions. Then that conclusions can be useful for you at that moment but probably not two years later, and most of the times, not useful for other people. That said, it's quite hard to me to say that a good headphone like M50 has been surpassed in quality and even at a lower price because each headphone sounds different and there's a great variety of recordings (all really different) and some headphones sound very good with some recordings acording to some people and the same headphones sound good with some other recordings for some other people.

Making that claim means that exist a headphone that is exactly the same as M50 but better and cheaper. And that doesn't even make any sense.

Maybe the market offers some good sounding (cheap) headphones nowadays, and you may find that one of those fits your likes better than M50s.

From what I've read I think you may find Takstar HD5500 pretty interesting. You can read and ask about this headphones here:

Best Luck!

i don,t think you will find much better than the ATH-M50 at its standard price point(120-150 USD) but you will find things that are comparable in SQ such as the Sennheiser HD 558 which just went down to around 110 USD.

i have owned both and liked the ATH-M50 more due to the fact that it has more bass, but this is personal preference since the HD 558s have much better sound stage and mid-range

the only pair that i could see being better are the DT 770 250ohm which are 150 USD (but these also need an amp to sound good). i cant say for sure if the DT 770s are better though since i don't own them.
