Speakers for $40 or less

This is a christmas gift and I have a VERY limited budget. I really don't want to go over. A sub would be nice, but I understand at this price that better speakers with no sub would probably produce decent enough bass and better overall sound. I would also like to keep them under 5-6" wide, as they have to fit on a desk.

Thanks in advance.

Save a bit more and buy something worth your money.

No. This isn't for an audiophile, they'll never notice a difference. If you want to give me suggestions, please do. Don't try to correct my parameters.

You can rely on amazon  reviews in this budget level IMO.  For this money you are not going to be buying anything other than disposable computer audio speakers, so expecting a 2.1 "advice" is limited to what you can actually buy.  Also are you looking for pc speakers or passive speakers as there is no mention of the desired use.

I honestly think if this is a gift then actual music may be more appreciated than hardware, which is not likely to last much beyond the following Christmas.

I understand everyone has a finite amount of money but there does become a point where you are almost throwing your money away.
