Last Mid ohio meet this year Fall meet here we come. (westerville again) (November 24th) impressions tread - Page 5

A question, for those who have been able to compare in the past, about balanced cables. I'm considering possibly getting a balanced cable for my HD650. I know we had several pieces of balanced equipment at the last meet, but I was focusing on SE stuff since I wasn't considering balancing at that point in time. How does it change/improve the sound? I'm seeing onlne some people saying no change and others are saying larger soundstage with tightened sound. So for those of you who are using balanced equipment, thoughts?

If I do end up going balanced, it'll be by upgrading my backing of Geek Pulse to the Geek Pulse X. I'd end up having balanced Alpha Dogs and HD650 most likely and keeping everything else SE, at least for a while anyways.

Beyond the stereotypically known said differences?

I don't have an amp that can do both, but I have amps that are either or.

And I can't tell ya.

From a technical standpoint you might think one was superior.

Listening with your ear hole it might be harder to say which is.

Well, maybe I'll borrow a balanced HD650 cable at some point. I've backed the Geek Pulse X which has both 1/4 and 4-pin XLR headphone jacks. I'm not sure what the stereotypical differences are. So if I borrow a cable and give it a try on both SE and balanced then I'll be able to judge for myself if going balanced is worth it.

Nah, you all should come down to Cinci. We'll have a meet in my office. That'd be perfect. Security wouldn't like me very much, but hey.

Actually typically Cincy talk is "y'all." I don't like sounding like I'm from south of the Mason Dixon when I am not.

Woulda been fun to drive down and have a little mini get together, I've been wanting to plug these HE400's into some schiit :)

So Eeepee, now that you've had the 650's for a few weeks whats the verdict? 650's or 600's?

Ya done did it again.  :D

I have a few Cincin friends and you guys talk funny whether you mean tah or not.  So close to Kentucky...

Vali was nice.  I made it ring, and that was interesting.  Better than Magni.  Magni has a ring to itself I don't like.  Not a ring exactly, but a brashness up there I can't help but hear.  I seem to be able to pick that out quickly on everything I hear, therefore assume it's the Magni.  It's distracting enough that it (not entirely) ruins the rest of the presentation, but it does affect my perception of the amp.  Enough that I won't buy one.  The Vali is better and would be given another chance or consideration.  But I don't think it deserves all the hype.

650.  Refined 600.  Simple as that.  I think I said to Jason, 650 over all (others).  Yep, over 800, 700, etc.    These are DAMN GOOD headphones.

Though my 600 pads are flat tires.  I pointed out to Jason how wasted they are, he tried em both.  I either listened to them for millions of hours, or they wore out just that fast.  Does it REALLY matter?  I dunno.  Could swap em, I suppose.  Don't think I need to, though.  I love the 600, but the 650 is just that much better (to me) that I could live happily ever after with JUST the 650.  You can have the rest, all of em.  Really.

I sit here with the 700s jamming away but inside I want the 650s on my head instead.

It's true.

The problem children were from the first batch. Mine was among those. My tubes had a 45º hard-on. Traded it for an E12. I made off quite well in that deal, it's one serious portable amp. Then come January I'll most likely be selling/trading off my Aune T1. The Geek Out should be coming in January and then my Geek Pulse X later in June.
