Using earbuds with amplifier; what happens? (random curious question)

I was bored so I hooked up the POS apple earbuds I have to my MAGNI/MODI setup and turned the volume up to 100% The earbuds had gratingly harsh highs that seemed to nearly damage the drivers. Anyway, I want to know what exactly is happening science-wise when one uses earbuds with an amp at maximum volume. Is this bad at all for the amp?

Depending on the maximum output of the amp, and the maximum power handling of the earbuds, it's very possible that you have destroyed the drivers.

A proper headphone amp shouldn't care at all. If you stress an amp for a long time then in some amps the parts can heat up to a point where they will eventually fail.

Head-/earphones:

1) the driver doesn't produce any sound anymore because the voice coil "blew out" like a fuse

2) the strong movement and exceeding the excursion limit destroyed the driver's surround and/or diaphragm - sound will be bass-light and distorted, there could even be mechanical damage done to the voice coil
