Recommended over-ears for under $150?

Well, with it getting closer and closer to Black Friday, and my friend's constant pestering, I think it's time to upgrade from my current ATH-M30.

My taste in music consists mainly of female vocals (Folk'ish? Gabrielle Aplin's music as an accurate example) and classical, though I occasionally tap into some classics (Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Nick Drake, CSN&Y, ect)

My limit is probably right around $150.

Thanks,

illyria

Edit - They will primarily be used at my computer.

Are you OK with open cans (they leak sound and don't isolate well)?

Do you have more than on-board sound?

I would be completely fine with open cans.

Currently I have whatever came with my computer, however, I would also be willing to spend $50'ish on something to fix that. (Is $50 enough?  If not, how much would be?)

Thanks for the quick reply.

A used Sony MDR MA900 might be your best bet.  A new one runs about $50 above your budget.  It's very good and extremely easy to drive (which is what you need with on-board audio).

Other good choices are the Senn HD 518 and 558.

Of course you can alway keep your ear to the ground and eye on the Deals thread on this forum.  Now to the end of the month or so is the perfect time for that.

The cans I mentioned deserve to fed with something better than on-board audio and regular MP3 files.  However, I don't do my serious music listening by way of a computer.  You'll have to get the best options for a DAC/amp/sound card within your budget from someone else.

Thanks for the information.  I have to wait about a month before I would be able to get it anyways (Shipping it to a friend and she is going to bring it down when she visits in a month), so I'll wait and see what shows up in the deals thread.

Thanks.

I'm thinking that I might as well spend closer to $225..  Would this change what headphones I should look out for, and if so, which ones?

I noticed that a lot of people recommend the Sennheiser 598, however, I would appreciate some other opinions.

Thanks,

Edit -

Another thought, I was also thinking of buying an Asus XONAR DG as a cheap amp, or maybe FiiO E6/11, would these be enough? If not, what would be recommended?

At your new price point, the Q 701 becomes available--but it needs a decent amp despite its relatively modest Ohm and sensitivity ratings.
