Bookshelf Speakers VS Computer Speakers for PC?

Hello,

I’m looking to upgrade the audio quality of my PC which I mostly use for music and gaming, and took the first step towards that by picking up a Sound Blaster Z sound card while it was on sale recently.

It’s hard to tell a difference in quality between the sound card and on-board audio when played on my Bose Companion II series II speakers, which from what I read aren’t that great.

Now I’m looking for a pair of speakers which can take advantage of this sound card, but being new to quality audio, I don’t know where to begin.

I’ve read good things about various computer speaker sets such as the Logitech Z623 but also read that buying a pair of bookshelf speakers along with an amplifier can often provide better quality audio for a similar price to high-end computer speakers. Being in a small room, loudness isn’t something I’m looking for in speakers, just something with quality sound that can take advantage of my sound card. Ideally something relatively small would be great also since I have limited desk space.

My budget for speakers is $150. What speakers would you recommend I buy?

Thanks for any help

Did you disable the motherboard's on-board audio? in the BIOS.

I just bought some MP5 (Monoprice 5") studio monitors from Monoprice, normal price is $165.

The MP5s appear to be rebranded M-Audio BX5s

I'm guessing the MP5s about the best sound you can get, for around $165 (plus tax & shipping).

Sometimes there are some good deals on used studio monitors on eBay.

Check out the Samson Resolv series, some good prices on used 5", 6" or 8" studio monitors (on eBay).
