Yeah. I have to replace my J3 at some point. I had it for almost 3 years and I have been using it almost everyday.

^ NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO suddenly the X5 is looking A LOT less ugly when compared to the new X1 prototype. LoL

The new design for me just looks too clunky and busy.

You got a winner here with these early renders..................

.... the silver scroll wheel pops/ contrasts so much better with the all black metal body.

It looks so much more clean and more pleasing on the eyes. Please just keep the design/ look simple James because it will appeal to a much bigger audience, not just "audiophiles".

The latest prototype looks like something only appeals to audiophiles cuz its kinda ugly tbh just like these. haha

Yeah sorry I don't think that design is too great, I liked all the early renders :/

Too many colors and too steampunky, keep it simple and clean :D

Thank you, sfwalcer, for saying what I couldn't bring myself to.

I like it, but maybe some color adjustments would make it more appealing. Outer silver part could be made black, scroll wheel silver, ditch the brass. Or else just black and silver in the same kind of configuration the X5 has.

yes, the last one is a little complex , too many colour and texture. here is the new design as the right one.

Or maybe like this one, but I can make sure that the orignial is not so good.

Like the idea of removing the most outer ring and leave the 4 buttons on the outside alone! xD Much simple now xD Maybe try making the screen bigger than the buttons?

If FiiO really wish to keep the gold, maybe consider making the gold ring slimmer like this one; [right] would be nice if FiiO can keep it that small even if FiiO choose other color xD

I am not sure why the current design evokes steampunk. Is it the copper-tone-looking ring in the middle? That is like one ring.

I agree with sfwalcer, a silver scroll wheel would look better. Especially on the left one:

silver mini buttons -> Black outer ring ->silver scroll wheel -> black inner ring-> silver big button

I vote for the one on the right. Looks neater/sleeker.

Can you just leave out the 4 buttons? Omg what's with FiiO products button placement. X3 buttons placement was awkward and so are X5 buttons.
Can't you just put all the buttons by the right side of the device instead? So much easier to navigate and looks a lot cleaner too...

why, the four bottoms make it easy to work. iPod also have four bottoms under the wheel.

Yeah but ipods ("classic") moved away from that to an all-encompassing click-wheel (that basically does everything).

Good looking and well thought minimalism.

And it goes to the merit of people at apple that still now, after so many years that the ipod has been introduced, the "tipology" remains basically the same.

James, isn't there a way to make your great DAPs look a little less like thick "first-model" ipods?

Yes but the 4 buttons are within the big wheel. These are 4 small separate buttons further apart.
why not stay with the earlier designs? If there need to be buttons you can also put them all by the side like Sony ZX1? It'll be much easier to navigate when the DAP is in the pocket with all of them lined up in 1 row by the side.

Hum, the news proposal looks not clean but really too much "clean" without any personality or equilibrium on the rendering. I like most the first prototype which may look steampunky but offers a great look and an identity to the DAP. The last rendiring are on the bad side of sober or minimalistic and looks like a John Deo or no-name DAP for me.
