I was waiting for the X1 to turn up. However if that's going to bassy (not all music lovers have deep pockets guys!) I might as well not bother.

The Sansa players sell because they sound well. This day and age they almost exclusively sell to enthousiasts on a budget. If the X1 is going to be a thumping mainstream player you're not getting that market and you're also going to miss the chance to get people into FiiO and buying X3 and X5 later on.

So, bad idea in my opinion. Now realizing full well that James won't care a bit I wish you guys a lot of fun with the X1 but it's not going to be my 2014 christmas present.

are people really hoping that they will get flagship sound on an entry level product ? really now ? isnt there ussually a reason why flagship daps are priced that way with the component its using propping up its cost

whatever best the company think it should sound like  that how i defined it since tuning the component to produce that sound requires additional, astell and kern obviously doesnt think too highly of the neutral sound signature , so does sony their current flagship closer to having a rather coloured sound instead, thus why neutral is not the measurement of the player being a flagship grade player

its however silly to expect that the x1 to sound exactly like the x5 , while costing around 25%of it , why even make the x5 at that point ?

LOL, maybe the answer is yes, I think it is hard to describe the sound in word and people should have a try by themself.

Any guesses when X1 will be released?

A very random guess... I'd say between Summer 2014 and December 2014.

July 2014 if I recall correctly :) I'm sure James mentioned about this at the beginning of this thread :)

Sure! And if I think you've produced yet another boombox? Then what? Do I get a refund for the purchase price and the shipping?

I stick with my original opinion. If you can let this thing do neutral (make it a feature to enable deep in the setup menu for all I care) and get it stocked by at least one serious internet retailer in Europe and North-America by November 1st you could have a real winner that sells faster than you can ship them. If you're too late or you get 2 serious reviews stating it's a basehead device then I think you will lose.

If you feel the need to distinguish between the series then do so on features. Take a look at Nikon for example. D3300, D5200, D7100 are all extremely capable cameras that can produce stunning images despite their differences in features.

I strongly believe when James mean "bassy", he mean slightly more bassy not overwhelming bass. Please do note that, at $100, name me a DAP that offer LO, expansion slot, easy scroll wheel, plays 24/192 bit files. That is what the X1 at $100 will offer.

At $200( price of X3), a DAP that offers minimum bugs, USB DAC, LO, coxial, expansion slot + built in 8GB memory, powerful enough for almost all portable headphones, feature so much function like the X3 and with a WM8740 or better chip. The DX50 come close, but if I am not mistaken, it does not offer USB DAC and it is buggier.

At $400 (price of X5), a DAP with double expansion slot with up to 120GB each! Such nice UI + good SQ, LO, coxial, USB OTG and all the long list of features that the X5 offer at less than $400.

Keep in mind the packaging and accessories the FiiO DAP come with! IMO, FiiO is doing excellent with their product planning otherwise they won't be at the stats that they are now! Guess we should not ask too much from James and FiiO after all. We all are humans: we need food to survive! Food cost money smily_headphones1.gif

Indeed I am quite disappointed to see FiiO choose to use other chips rather than WM8740 for X1 but I re-read the info James gave us, at $100, we really can't ask for more!

IMO

thanks, can't agree more except the WM8740, too many WM8740 so we want to provide something new to the market.
