You are perfectly right Brooko, I wrote this post based on my Fiio E17 which is not just an amp but also a dac with a lot of features, when paired to my AK100 I'm getting a real heaven out of it, somehow I never auditioned a fully transparent portable amp even with my most sensitive iems at 16ohms

 - voltage
 - frequency change either via hardware EQ controls (like bass boost, or tone controls), or adding it's own signature (eg if the amp has a warm signature by design)
 - impedance (which in turn can affect frequency)
 - avoiding the DAP's amp stage if the DAP has a line-out feature which allows it

An amp doesn't necessarily change "more details, clarity, bass, and wider soundstage".  It's not going to add those things if the DAP is already perfectly capable of driving the intended headphones with the required voltage, current, and impedance.

Given that the X1 already has a less than one ohm impedance - you shouldn't need an add on amp to correct impedance related issues (hiss) with really sensitive IEMs.  And unless you're intent on adding hardware EQ, or driving headphones that genuinely require more current/voltage (eg fender f4i's LCD2), or intentionally avoiding the X1's amp stage (ie adding your own preferred colouration) - then an amp will do exactly what it's designed to do (increase the current/voltage to make the signal stronger - louder).

Oh - one other thing an amp can assist with is providing more power to avoid clipping (if the DAP is weak on power with a particular headphone).

I would challenge anyone that hears magical increases in "detail, clarity, bass and soundstage" with a headphone that is easy to drive (ie most IEMs, plus a lot of portable headphones with high sensitivity and low impedance) to actually perform a properly (ie with an SPL meter) volume matched blind test. I guarantee a lot of people would be surprised.

Personally - I'm looking forward to using the X1 solely with IEMs as a very portable option (no amp).

Edited - spelling

The advantage of an portable amp

1, boost the power. this is quite easy to understand.

2, tuning the sound signification.   this is why we develop E12IME version cause lots of people do not need a huge power cause they are using some very easy to drive IEM but still pair it with E12. which have plenty of power.

OK, at the same time, been a hi-fi'er so many year, sometime you need something special to show you are professional guy.

I can see lots of old man take a very very big DSLR with a very very big  lens, sometimes it will not help you take great photo but it make you feel better . :L3000: .

do remember that human have lots of demand except the features , it is the basic demand only. so if it can make you look cool, why not ?

That's a refreshingly honest admission, James! Perhaps amps and dacs are the Ferrari and Porsche penis extensions of the audiophile world.

Nothing wrong with looking cool and "well hung" in the portable department. Just try not to get your inpedence and impotence ratings mixed up when talking to the ladies!

Given its size it matches to new E11K,Im guessing......so the kit for it?

not, it can be used for any amps.

I believe he mean "the E11k fits nicely with X1. Will there be a dedicated kit for it like X5 + E12?" Correct me if I am wrong xD

But then it cannot be like HS-6 bundle kit then......unless its an adjustable stacking frame to be able to fit most amps......say universal frame.
HS-6 is exclusively designed for sandwiching E12/DIY & X5....correct me if im wrong.

2, Clear case ( similar with HS11)

3, Leather case ( similar with HS9)

4, Stand kits for car ( new , let you connect your X1 with your car audio ).

5, An docking desk amp ( in the future , similar with E09K ) , it can be used in our new DAP too.

6, Special LO cable ( we used 11pin micro USB socket so the line out will be install both in the headphone out socket and the micro USB socket ), it can be used in our new DAP too.

7, Armband. ( for sport )

Guys, you can see it is not easy for us to satisfy our user but we will try our best to make our user happy

yeah Billy you got it right....Think our James took the other way (compatibility) so he might responded like X1 can be combined to any amps....however the bundle kit can be for only one model tho (E11K here) if he says its like HS-6.....(he confirmed in the previous page)

The HS6 can also be used with any number of amps. It's basically a hard frame around the X5, around which you can loop elastic bands around amps of any size that roughly fits with the X5--just like ye old silicone armband arrangement--without said elastic bands covering the buttons or screen of the X5.

FiiO, any chance for colorful bands? Maybe blue/red? biggrin.gif
