The FiiO X1 uses WM7840 DAC which is the same DAC used on higher end DAP including HM-901. smily_headphones1.gif saying "almost" is just to play safe smily_headphones1.gif

Still seems odd that so many are coming out with the 8740, the Pico amp/dac was using it back in late '07 (DacMagic and some other used it too).  Interesting to see a surge in its popularity many years later.

C3 is a very competent dap, I'm just hoping it's not like the x3 sound sig.

C3 is closer to DX50 (or AK100 in that matter) than to X3. Very clear with a wide soundstage, but a bit lacking in texture and control.

Any chance for a shootout for your DAP collections like what you did to your amp? Hehe

Will probably do something like a shootout next years, at least between X3, DX50 and HM700.

Interesting DAP from fiio. Keep up the great work. The 88*50 looks sweet. Can this DAP connect to a USB DAC or USB DAC/AMP via digital out??

No. That totally negates 1) having a high-quality DAC in it to begin with and 2) its design as basically an iPod Mini with high-quality decoding hardware and a cleaner, higher-output, amplifier. Before anyone disputes that last part, remember the more mainstream devices using a similar integrated DAC-headphone driver chip has an output of about 5mW to 15mW @ 32 ohms (which on most IEMs is still enough to damage your hearing). The X1 does 100mW, with better damping factor and a lot less distortion at 50mW than mainstream devices have at 15mW. This wasn't designed to drive an LCD-2 but will pretty much push 99% of IEMs out there.

No I was saying the c3 is a good dap at the 100 dollar price point so it's hard to tell if the x1 will be a total step up from it.

And that I was hoping the x1 doesn't follow the usual warm sound sig from them.

I am thinking that to make X1 easy to implement (and so to keep it less than $100), FiiO could have designed it in similar fashion as C3 and DX50. Basically just remove the hardware volume control and use the DAC internal volume control, then followed by a fixed amp / buffer stage. That should be pretty clean sounding.
