Audio setup for my PC and PS4?

I want a setup that I will be able to use with my PC and my new PS4. I will be gaming on both. Should I get a DAC and an amp or a receiver with that stuff built in? Also, why wouldn't a DAC give me surround sound for PC gaming? I'm really new to this stuff and am very confused. Thanks!

Also, my budget is 200-300 dollars.

One option is to buy an A/V receiver that has HDMI and Headphone surround sound (most Yamaha receivers do).

Find a used A/V receiver (Yamaha) off Craigslist or eBay

Or a refurb receiver here.

Otherwise you can get an Astro Mix-amp for use with any gaming console and a sound card for the PC.

A DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) has nothing to do with surround sound,

surround sound is processed by an audio processor (which 95% of the time does come with a built in DAC feature on the same chip)

So a DAC chip and an audio processor are two separate chips, but can be built into the same sound card, internal or external.

The Mix-amp functions as a DAC and audio processor.

It would do the job. Being able to connect to your PC and gaming console.

You would want to use headphones in the 120-Ohm to 300-Ohm range with it.

And how would this receiver sound compared to a Schiit Modi and Magni? I know that with those I would only be able to use it with my PC but I'm still curious.

Also, should I think about getting a soundcard for my PC instead of just using the 3.5mm jack?

The Schiit Magni/Modi combo would do a better job of driving headphones and you could also use low impedance headphones, down to 12-Ohms, with the Magni amp.

The Modi DAC would be better (audio quality wise) then the receiver's DAC.

So audio quality wise the Magni/Modi combo is better.

Is it possible to use the MODI DAC with the Yamaha receiver?

The receiver has analog inputs so that should work well.

Isn't the ps4 digital only? That may be something to take into consideration to make sure that you don't miss out on connectivity possibilities because of lack of inputs on some of the more barebone dac/amp possibilities.

It had HDMI and digital. Will the ps4 be compatable with the receiver?

And will I need a soundcard to connect my PC to the receiver or can I just connect it via HDMI from my video card?

Yes. That will cause no problem at all. It can receive both audio and video through the HDMI port. Most modern video cards (say made in 2008-) can send both audio and without a problem to the receiver. But like PurpleAngel said, an external DAC will more than likely sound better than the built in one in the AVR.

Alright well I think I will get that receiver and modi DAC. Is there anything else I need to buy before I get those?

As long as you have the right cables (hdmi+rcas+usb) you should be set to go.
