I save them and maybe someone will ask for an open pair. When i have too many, i list them for sale and hope to break even. Audeze arent returned that often though. The cheaper the headphone the more returns. I get the most on the hd600 and he-400

After writing that on here you're going to be inundated with requests for cheap headphones :-)

Great review! Thanks
My experience going from the Th900 to the XC was the apparent missing bass but after a few minutes of listening the bass is there and its hard to imagine having more than that. Your explanation of what's happening is dead on. They have a lots of sub bass.

Not sure why you get more returns on the HD-600's Justin, I have I pair which since getting the LCD-XC, I only listen to occasionally, but using them with my GS-Xmk2 / K-01 they still sound very good.
The 4 pin XLR silver custom cable I use with them ( I find ) does improve on the SQ though.

Probably something to do with people coming on here, reading too much and convincing themselves that what they have isn't good enough. I often think about buying the HD-600/650 and then have done with it all. Chance would be a fine thing!!!

I wonder how many people return their relatively cheap headphones to Justin only to buy a better pair.

Yup. The whole purpose of this board is to tell you that your audio setup can be better.

Still doesn't mean you can drive big orthodynamic headphones with MP3 players ;-)

I still never got a response to my question about what volume you guys play your LCD XC at, dbA at ear level.

I think the explanation may simply be that I play it at a low enough volume that an amplifier has no effect.

You're welcome, for giggles I did a little experiment the last couple of days before the video was posted. I listened to nothing but the Q701 via my Aune T1 with Gold Lion tube and then went back to the XC. It took me a couple of hours until my brain reclimatized itself back to the XCs sound sig. The first hour I was whoa, crazy heavy bass.

That's probably true, which is why IMO auditioning before buying ( when possible ) is a must.
I wasn't able to do that with the BHSE, GS-Xmk2, SR-009's, and LCD-XC's, but I did with the HD-600's, which is why I kept them.
I'm also very happy with the audio gear I wasn't able to audition though.

P.S. For what the HD-600's cost me, it's one of the best audio buy's I ever done.

True, I've talked to Ray and heard that he uses HD600 or HD650 (not sure which) for all his amps. (could be diff one now since it's been 2 years).

HD600 is great one to buy.

Around 90dB average

What amp are these good with? Aren't these designed to not necessarily need an amp/dac?

Depends on your definition of "need". You can drive them to satisfactory levels with most any source, they are quite efficient.

Planars are especially sensitive to amplification, so you won't get what they are capable of without good amplification.

One of the best amps I have heard with planars is the Bryston BHA-1. This costs almost as much as the XC though, and I am sure there are very nice choices for less money.

I personally don't like the Schiit gear with planars (and I own an Asgard) though others disagree...
