AUDEZE LCD XC - Page 105

The resonance I'm hearing I believe is lower in frequency than what you're describing. Is the resonance you hear exasperated by certain types of music?

All types of music have lots of information at 2khz, what I hear affects all music.

ok ... thanks for your insight.

I am really digging how the XC sounds right off the Red Wine Astell and Kern AK120.  Underpowered for sure, but the overall tone and coloration the combo exudes are very to my liking.  Was curious if the new mark II AK120 retains the same general sound signature as the original AK120.  If anyone has the new mark II AK120  and XC, please let me know how the XC feels directly out of it without any amplification.  I'd like to know specifically if the mark II's added power output over the original AK120 will help make the XC feel a bit more full sounding.  Not sure if the power upgrade in the new AK120 Mark II is negligible when using the XC.

The AK120 II only puts out 240mw into the XC and Audeze recommends 1-4W for best sound. You would likely get more bang for the buck by adding a high powered amp like the iBasso PB2.

From everything I've read the AK120 II sounds different than the AK120.

From the warm and euphoric Wolfson DAC to the detailed dual Cirrus Logic DACs. If you like the tone and coloration of the original I'm not sure you'd like the latest version. Then again, you might. I'd audition if you can.

I read an article (can't find it damnit!) that reported the original AK120 nailed it for being its own signature, while the AK120 II was criticized for trying to be an AK240 but not quite getting there.

Back to the XC..........

Edit: The best thing to do is to pair with a neutral portable amp like the Fiio e12. It's powerful, clear, neutral and has a great bass boost for a very reasonable price.

Ouch, but in a good way.  Glad I don't have to invest more cash into the Mark II.

IMO, the Mjolnir is not a great pairing with the XC, and the Gungnir with Mjolnir is even worse. Just my $.02. Gungnir is way too harsh, and the Mjolnir's slight treble tilt makes it even worse.

Just got Centrance Hi-Fi M8 amp/dac. Beautiful pairing with my XC's. Very dynamic and detailed sound. Much better then OPPO HA-1 and Burson Conductor which I had before. I cant believe how it's possible from such small portable amp.

Interesting that you say that - I had been wondering about the HiFi M8.  Another advantage would be being able to buy the version with the full size 4 pin balanced jack and not having to buy new cables or an adapter to use them balanced

Yes, I use the amp through balanced jack.

I have the Mjolnir and Gungnir on loan and they just don't mesh with the XC as well as my Oppo HA-1 by itself.  I agree with the user who said the Schiit rig was too harsh.

The XCs are definitely tuned brighter than the 2/3.

I have the Gungnir/Mojo stack and while they meshed very well with the LCD 2.2 and 3, I kinda wince when I use the XC. I think I've solved it by using the XC with a tube amp.

When I first bought the XCs, I thought I made a big mistake. I was patient, though, and found after a couple hundred hours of play its overly detailed nature settled down and was replaced with a clarity and liquidity that is highly addictive.
