I owned K701s and they were way too bright for me, even after 500 hours of burn-in, and yes, the bass was not nearly what I had hoped for. The XCs are not nearly as lean in the bass as the 701s, at least to my ears.

Thanks, trying to establish some sort of barometer for myself.  With the K701s, people often said the bass was sufficiently accurate, however I found it fairly non-existent (something like the Heed Canamp helped there, but not really).  Denons are obviously fairly bass heavy, so when people describe bass as less, but accurate, I get a little worried :).  Bass isn't the end all that I look for in a headphone, however I don't want to get something that'll make me wish I was wearing my Denons instead.  Things look pretty promising for the XC!

Unless you buy a lot of headphones, it sounds like you did a similar upgrade path to me :).  I started with Ultrasone Trackmaster's->AKG K701->Denon D5k.

I didn't have Ultrasones, but Grado RS1s before the 701s. Yeah, the 701s were a big disappointment to me. I strongly recommend the XCs, the best headphones I've ever owned and that includes a pair of $4,000 Stax earphones from the early 2000s.

Thanks for the comparisons!

I recently posted a rather lengthy impression in the Oppo HA-1 thread here with the LCD-XC. I would say that with the right gear the bass on the XC is perfect. Simply perfectly balanced with the other frequencies. Impactful, sharp, textured, accurate and extended is how I would describe it. Lifelike and accurate to the recording if you will.

I also mention that I was considering selling them until I heard them to their full potential on the HA-1 and now I prefer the XC bass to my LCD-2 rev2, which I thought I'd never say. The 2s simply don't sound accurate enough anymore and too bloated in comparison.

My listening tests were with the stock balanced cable that came with the XC.

Interesting analysis, thanks.  Looks Like I'll have to add the Oppo to the wishlist...

Think I might be ordering the XC sometime this week!

great stuff - they could be in the pipeline for me soon!

Yeah, the combo is brilliant. The most natural music I've ever heard through an amp and headphones. Let us know if you grab the XC!

The LCD-XC sounds amazing. If you want my views or opinions on it, PM me. I am no longer posting formal opinions or semi-formal reviews here.

WTF!? Why?! lol

One last question before I jump in:  are there any seasonal sales that Audeze typically does that it would be smarter for me to wait for?  Memorial Day, July 4th, etc.

Just want to make sure there's no reason for me to wait any longer :).

Not knowing where you live, but if you are in CA, for example, there are two hifi shows where Audeze has a presence: the Newport Beach show coming up at the end of this month and the San Francisco show in August. Audeze offers show specials during these events, as well as others around the country I suppose.

Otherwise, bite the bullet ... the expense will be swept away by the XC's glorious sound.
