Sennheiser HD600 vs Sony MDR-MA900

Could anyone compare the two headphones? My favorite music artists include Coldplay, Jack Johnson, Imagine Dragons, Bastille, Mumford and Sons, Fun, John Mayer, Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard. Would like to hear all of your thoughts. Thanks!

What's your current setup like?  From what I gather on here, they're both really good headphones, but the HD600 will require some amping to really get it to come alive.  THe HD600 is also known to be more balanced and detailed, while the MA900 will have more bass.

They're really kind of in different leagues all together though, the cost of an HD600 will run about twice that of the MA900, if you add in proper amping then you're looking at possible a 300-400 dollar total price difference.  Many people will stand by the MA900 as one of the best 150-200 dollar open headphones, but the HD600 is in a different league.

I would agree with this. I do have both the HD600 and the MA900. They're both great headphones. As mentioned, the HD600 is more balanced, neutral and detailed sounding, with a wider soundstage. The MA900 is much more forward sounding, with great bass and mid-range.

The simple choice will come down price and how you plan to listen to your music. The HD600 really does need a headphone amp to bring out the full richness of its sound. While you can plug it directly into a smartphone, it will sound very low at even the highest volumes. The MA900 is perfectly fine plugged directly into an iPod, MP3 player or smartphone. An amp helps, but is not as critical as with the HD600.
