FIIO e-17 and CD pre-emphasis

Hi All,

It is probably a wrong question, due to my lack of knowledge, but I have the following question:

CD record using pre-emphasis in the master process:

- Play directly using the CD Player DAC, sounds fine;

- Play using the optical output connected to the FIIO e-17: sounds weird.

Can this have something to do with the pre-emphasis? Or it is only me imagine things?

In case it is not my imagination, how can I handle this properly?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Daniel

Dear All,

It has not been my imagination, it was actually the FIIO e17 ignoring the emphasis flag, or my CDP not sending the information to the E17.

I ended up using SOX, and now all is fine.

Thanks again,

Daniel

The pre-emphasis flag is meant for actual CD Audio players (hardware or software), who know about it and perform some kind of de-emphasis prior to conversion to an analog signal. DACs are only meant to process PCM: they are unaware of any sort of encoding or processing that is performed upstream.

So, in order to correctly play those CDs (or rips of those), as you figured out, you need to perform de-emphasis prior to feeding your DAC. Your CD player didn't perform it when outputing a digital signal, probably because that output is meant for transport of the unadultered source, for processing by some other piece of equipment.

It's pretty much the same thing with HDCD, which needs an HDCD-aware CD player, or prior decoding, in order to output the intended signal.

There is also only a very small number of discs which use pre-emphasis, and it's possible to do this processing in software. (I used SoX to handle it if I remember correctly)

Yup. Mostly from the early 80s.
