PC headphone advice needed.

Thread Starter

Hi very new to the site and am looking for some advice about headphones, amps and soundcards.

Not sure where to start but I plan to mostly watch movies, play games and lastly listen to music.

I plan on purchasing a Creative Labs Soundblaster Z unless I am given a good reason not to, I really don't see a need to go with a ZXR or some of the high quality Asus products. I am building a new pc atm will post specs at the bottom. I plan on purchasing Cyberlink powerdvd ultra 13 for movie watching prefer blu-ray. Again any advice on this purchase would be nice too. I mostly want quality headphones for movie viewing, I appreciate good range and deep bass, but do not want it to drown other noised when watching movies also I am very tired of movies I have to turn up to hear dialog and I get deafened when action or music kicks in. I plan on using the SBZ for 5.1 while gaming and do not require a headset with a mic, just headphones max price $200 preferably $150. Lastly I listen to music occaisonally but am not overly concerned about super rich sounds though I listen to alot of classical. If I can get some headphones that cover all of that with out an amp that would be great but willing to get an amp so long as I don't lose the 5.1 surround I am okay with virtual surround as i don't think tru 5.1 headphones are much better.

Thanks for any help given.

PC specs

AMD FX-8350 OC 4.8Ghz

NZXT Phantom 530 Case

NZXT hale90 v2 1200W full modular PSU

Asus 23inch LED/LCD Monitor

I mostly play games on this pc but watch blu ray movies as well and that is what I will be using these headphones for, also must be closed not open cans.

Creative Sound Blaster Z (SB1500), $100

AKG K612 Pro headphones, $160

Have not used the K612 Pros, but so far they seem to get good reviews.

AKG K550, sometimes they can be found for less than $200. Just wait for a price drop or look into the F/S forum.

HarmanAudio (AKG) sells refurb K550s with factory one year warranties, on eBay.

My winning bid for the K550s was $180, but others have won for less.

But at the SB-Zs headphone impedance out is 22-Ohms and the K550s are only 32-Ohms, you might get a bloated bass from the K550s.

Good to know. I wasn't aware of this.
