When is an album considered sold?

If an artist sold 1,000,000 albums, does this mean that he sold 1,000,000 albums to stores or does this mean that 1,000,000 ablums were purchased from stores? How does this whole thing work, I'm confused.

The number of albums sold by an artist is based upon the number of albums purchased by customers. Shipping to the stores wouldn't count as a sale.

Not necessarily according to the RIAA. This is an old article but I don't believe it's changed.

SoundScan on the other hand is what is actually sold.
