Portable Amp(/DAC?) Recommendations For KRK KNS-8400

Hey all!

Just a little bit about myself: I'm currently a rather impoverished university student who, though I've always loved music, is only just now getting into doing research and actually spending money on quality instead of branding.

As such, I am rather poorly versed on the subject. A month and a bit ago I did some extensive reading through the headphone buyer's guide and finally decided on the KRK KNS-8400. I am really loving them so far (so much better than the Beats and Sennheiser stuff I've gotten off the shelf), but am finding the bass balancing a little off and the power output from my Galaxy Nexus also doesn't seem to be up to snuff.

As such, I am looking at buying an in-line portable amp. I seem to have narrowed it down to two relatively cheap ones: the FiiO E6 and the Fiio E07K. The price difference between the two brought up my question of: what does the E07K do so much better than the E6? Am i paying for the display and more customization in EQ settings etc? overall sound quality? and do I even need a DAC?

Thanks for all your help!

Justin

EDIT: Forgot to ask, what do you all listen to on your expensive cans? What am I missing in my audio experience?

The E6 is just a headphone amp. The E07K has a DAC built in as well. Not sure if the DAC in the E07K would work with your Galaxy Nexus.

You are primarily paying for the things you listed and the 24/96 DAC. IMHO, the external DAC is most useful when you use a laptop as the source. Laptop audio (at least common laptops like Dells & Lenovos) sucks eggs. I'm not sure of the differences between the amp section in the E6 vs E07K, but from the specs on the Fiio website, the E07K has over twice the output power of the E6 (220 mW vs 100 mW). I have the E10, which has an output in between those two (150 mW),and I find that it is under-powered when trying to drive 300 ohm full-size phones. YMMV

Thanks for the responses guys! It s good you mentioned the DAC for the laptop as I forgot to mention I spend a lot of time using my cans with a laptop as well.

Looks like I'll go with the E07K for now then!
