Buy Audio Technica ATH-M50 or Fiio E11?

Hi,

I own a pair of AKG K518, and when I bought it a year ago it was my first, small step into the good quality headphones world. Before that I only used stock Apple ones.

Now a year later, I read everywhere that the ATH-M50 is the road to the audiophile world.

Is it better for me to avoid buying the Fiio E11 to increase the SQ of the AKG K518, because the Fiio E11 is mainly an amp and the fact that the AKG K518 doesn't have so great SQ, and save up another 30-50$ to only buy the ATH-M50 without the Fiio E11?

EDIT: Damn it, the more you search on the web, the more headphones you find that are superior to the prior one. I just came across the ATH-A900X, is it any good for deep bass and hip hop/ pop type of songs?

Hello, I would like to start by saying I am in no way a pro at high end listening. I have learned, through much expense, that if you are looking for higher quality music sound you should start with the headphones, they make the biggest impact. I have both the ATH-M50 and the A900X, the sounds are different, on some acoustic music I like the 900's better, on electronic or hard rock I choose the M50's. My wife hates the a900x because they are not adjustable, so if they don't fit they will fall of with any little movement.

I would not recommend the Fiio E11 right now because it doesn't have a DAC. If you use ipods or a laptop for your music you should start with getting a decent DAC to convert your files and then send them through an amp to your headphones. Sound quality will be improved. Fiio has some pretty good starting DAC/AMP combos, such as the Fiio E07K Andes which if you use with a Line out on an ipod or through the usb connection of your laptop will take over the DAC work.

Hope this helped out some. Good luck on your audio experience. I know I'm hooked.

What sources are you plugging the headphones into?

I do like the sound of my ATH-A900X headphones, very musical sound.

I'm using a Nexus 4 and I like listening to deeo bass, not bass that overshadows mids and highs. My AKG 518 I feel like has a quanity bass and not quality...
