audio technica ath-m50 vs beyerdynamic dt880 pro

Hi,

First post, please be gentle!

I'm looking for some advice over which headphones would be best suited to my needs.
The two that have particularly caught my eye are:

Audio Technica AT-M50
Beyerdynamic DT880 PRO

I listen to lots of different genres of music, but a great deal of classical, jazz, folk. Some rock and electronica too. I don't need it for movies and I'm not a big bass nut by any means.
I'll be using these exclusively indoors and mostly on an iPod, with tracks at 320kbps and hoping to get the Fiio E12 amplifier.
I have a pair of Sennheiser HD 380 PRO but I'm looking for something a little more comfortable. I don't have experience enough of the differences between open back and closed back other than I read that open back gives a more natural sound.

I will also be using the headphones to monitor recordings. I owned a pair of Beyerdynamic DT100's years ago but they broke, so not sure of build quality.
I'm sort of veering towards the DT880 PRO's because they look very comfortable and perhaps the open back would be more suited to the music I'll be listening to a lot, but I've heard that the top end and midrange can sound a bit metallic. Can anyone comment on that please?
I've heard only good things about the M50's. I'm a bit lost and can't get out to a store to try these out.

Any advice much appreciated. Thanks.

DT880 is much better for sounding natural/neutral. It wins over the M50 in every way apart from a bit extra bass-slam on the deep end.

It suits your needs better than the M50 unless you absolutely need great isolation.

+1

They need an amp.

Haven't tried the 880s yet, but after going through the HDJ2000s, V-Moda M80s and Crossfade LPs, the M50s still sound the absolute best. Second only to the Sennheiser Amperiors to my ears. The fact that they're circumaural also puts them on top for me.

Thanks very much for the input. Looks like the beyerdynamics are the way to go for me.
