DAC inside drive bay (no pci slots left)

Thread Starter

Hi,

Is there such a thing as a DAC inside a drive bay which requires no spare pci / pcie slots. Or possibly a mod solution like getting an external DAC, putting it in a drive bay and looping the motherboard connections through the case?

Personal preference I don't really want an external DAC if possible.

Headphones are audio technica ad900 and onboard audio is realtek ALC887 if you think my headphones arn't worth a DAC / trouble i'm open to convincing.

FiiO E10 external USB-DAC-Amp, $75.

External DAC/Amp is really your only choice.

A mod could be quite interesting, though I don't know how...

This is just silly. If you absolutely must have the dac inside the case, then set a USB dac on top of your drive and route a M-F 1/8 extension cable out the front of the case so you can plug in your headphones.

But really? You would go to all this trouble not to have a tiny box plugged into a USB port? Really?

There is no "convincing" - you have to try it yourself. An amp is probably going to do more for you than an external dac, but both are better than onboard mobo sound - but only you can decide that for yourself.
