$999 Calyx M with DXD + DSD, 64GB + SD + µSD storage - Page 55

No not really. Almost any product can be made better
By using external devices. I am sure if you take the ak240 as is it sounds really good.
But add a balanced external amp or even a single ended
One. It has to improve the sound. Now go through
The trouble of modded it now this I would not bother to do with such an ready uber expensive product

:D ... I convinced Vinnie to look also at the Calyx M to see what improvements he could bring to it (like he successfully do the the AK100/120 : "real" line out, new DAC chip, .... ).

Here is what he wrote me:

" I'd love to get my hands on both the Calyx M and the AK240 stock units, compare them.  Then see what kind of modding potential they have and which player would sound better after mods.

The question I have to you (and everyone else in the Calyx M and AK240 threads) is what mods would people be interested in?  It seems like some want these players to be optimized to be used with an external amp. And some want them to be optimized to be the best all-in-one player?

I'm not sure what kind of space is inside these players, but if the amp output stage can be improved to the level of the best portable amps, then I think it makes sense to focus on that.  BUT - I'm not sure how good their dac implementations are.  The WM8741 is a better sounding chip to both the Cirrus Logic and Saber chips used by the AK240 and Calyx M - but it uses more power.

I was thinking about how much better these players can be if the battery was removed and an external battery was used.  Then there would be space inside for crazy good mods!

I wish I can follow these threads more carefully, but I am so busy.  But please let people know they can message me with questions and I will try to respond, and give my honest opinions.  And once I try these stock players, I will give my honest impressions on how they all sound in relation to each other.  "

I honestly think Vinnie does a great job, but I just wish all these 1k+ DAP can be used without MODs.

They can it's your choice to improve what they are.

Do not get caught up in the best syndrome
Most people just buy things and use it as I do
Them there is the people that read all that can be done here
And the endless debate to what is best.
Buy listen enjoy

The whole thing strikes me as really presumptuous. I would have a Vinnie mod an iPod or AK anytime. But a Headamp amplifier? No thanks. Some products are actually designed right. Let's see where the M fits into this dichotomy.

I think we should try the M before wanting to mod it, amp it or dip it in soy sauce...getting a bit ahead of ourselves.

Well... soy sauce is good on just about anything.  :-)

absolutely agree, and if Calyx M sounds at least as good as AK240 or bests it then M will be a no brainer.
i can always buy dedicated DSD capable DAC like Teac UD501 or much better and be happy. To each his own.

This is just why we need a "digital out" on the M to be able to feed, at home, your HOME DAC.:D

mate, at home i feed my DAC (not duck biggrin.gif )with Mac Mini SSD and Audiorvana Pro via Audiophilleo 2 with PP via high quality USB and SPDIF into preamp. i doubt any DAP would be able to beat this chain, so why i need ak240 just to learn this is waste? i am hard core and corny and prefer proper stacks to DAPs when possible. believe me no DAP will be able to beat dedicated transport and DAC.

So what is your point most if us have office and home rigs.
I also have a dap to use with my IEMS.
And there is always something better.
So why pick on the daps ??

Ouch, completely forgot Chord Hugo looks terrific solution as well.

while on the go i need really portable DAP without need of amping. Ok, i have amp but use it only in hotel rooms or rented appts during travel.
