$999 Calyx M with DXD + DSD, 64GB + SD + µSD storage - Page 6

My end game DAP requirement would be to use it without any external amps/dacs. Even with awesome specs/implementation, if there is a need for external complements it would defeat my purpose of getting a portable DAP... Same goes with the RWAK120-B

Yeah sure, think about it if it had a great balanced amp it'd start looking like a double decker dap, translation a stack. You can't just can't win them all, your design decision to throw the kitchen sink will require more space more components.

Well everyone's end game DAP is subjective, even if your great balanced amp requires more space there will always be a better balanced amp in the future which makes the initial great amp seem not so great anymore.

I'm sure there is just a good enough balanced amp with the size just enough to fit inside a portable DAP without the need for a double decker.  ;)

So a kitchen sink is not really necessary... and if Calyx M has a good built in amp inside, it just serves to prove my point ;)

I guess we shall see. Check my last statement if I could stop chasing the illusive best. There is always going to be a best in a near future near you. If they find out that it becomes prohibitive shrinking components to ridiculous sizes, they'll be happy to book a chip transplant under your skin. wink.gif

I would not buy a 1K USD DAP that requires yet another portable amp... I cant do the maths or maybe I am just cheap... Buy for a 2-400 DAP, i will happily pursue amping.....

Yep i agree.... any single box for transportable music at 1k shouldn't need an amp to sound it's best.. It should sound bloody fantastic all by itself.... Hmmmmm maybe one day a serious UK brand will come out with a DAP and completely destroy all the current offerings...imagine a Naim, Merridian, Chord or Musical Fidelity DAP that had a years research put into it... Hey maybe this thing will be at that sort of level....... maybe....

There are lots of things we say we would not do until someone catches you doing it. If the financial aspect stops you then great at least you know your limits and your are a smart man not to succumb to the latest greatest and the most expensive. There is a fruitful market out there entirely dedicated to the seeker, companies know that, marketing wizards damn know it quite well they are the ones who invented a whole science around it. We are so much bombarded with buy, own you must have that we fuel our desire to get something at any cost for the sake of SQ. Hence why we all gather here waiting for this dap to see if it will fit our vision of the greatest. Like you I truly hope they'll deliver.

excuse me, AK100 needs amp, people also use AK120 with amp and claim better results, now Vinnie is moding AK120 to B mod pure amp...

want more examples?

i use RWAK100 pure and amped with T1 and i find RWAK100 amped still better than not amped.

more examples??? people claim DX50 sounds best amped ...

more examples? wait i will find them :D

as things stand today there are only HM901 and DX100 which do not need amping and still not ideal.

so i am eager to see if Calyx will beat any of them, at least we talk here about true high-end gear maker and result can be stunning. Calyx DAC was highly acclaimed for what it does and this DAP can be next in line to bring high fidelity to portable.

ouch, sorry, wrong thread.

as regards remark, look, we do not know how it will sound and if it will need amp or not. how can we tell something like this? i too would look for DAP capable doing it without amping.... but talking about bulky after seeing DX100 and HM901 is all relative to what you compare :D

Anyone who is hoping the Calyx amp will be as powerful as the dx100/hm901 is dreaming. The biggest problem is space, the dx100/hm901 have two full size pcbs each, which is why they are so thick. The Calyx wont be able to match them with half the pcb space, it will probably be around half as powerful as the dx100/hm901.

Its a trade off I welcome, at least the Calyx can fit in my pocket and be fairly portable unlike dx100/hm901. Anyway, DX100/hm901 power is overkill for most iems.
