I was an early M fan but no longer:
- lousy battery life
- battery drains when the unit is off (which they refuse to admit)
- laggy UI (that often outright freezes - all you can do is wait for the processor to catch up)
- distorts with many dynamic IEMs unless you use an adapter that diminishes sound quality
- no folder browsing
- no ongoing support (FW upgrades)

The positives are very real though:
- excellent SQ with balanced armature IEMs (thick and euphonic, not especially airy)
- beautiful screen
- excellent UI (but for no folder browsing, also undermined by insufficient processor power)

It is a remarkable DAP in many ways but too much of a PITA to get any use from me now. Lotoo PAW Gold rules my roost. It is pricey though.

I agree with your positive comments on sound quality. I use it with my Roxannes, A12's, and K10's.

How would you compare the Lotoo Gold sound signature to rhe M? Also if you have heard any of the AK players, how would you compare to those?

I have read great things regarding the Lotoo but not sure I can get past that gold wheel.

Thanks,
Ken

I think that @audionewbi can give you good reflections on this (and probably steer you to where he already has).

I do not want to turn this into an LPG thread; there already is one. I would say that the LPG is a more dynamic and airy sound whereas the M is thicker and more euphonic. I find the LPG to be a bit recessed in the mids but it has an excellent PMEQ that can fix that. LPG is more powerful than the M.

I have said it before and I say it again: The PAW Gold without the gold plated wheel would not be the PAW Gold.

I am not a fan of the AK series. The SQ is quite good but they are underpowered and lousy value. I compared the AK240 and LPG directly, and bought the latter.

Sorry for the late reply. I cannot summarize it better than what cooperpwc has. In short of you want a good sounding player and dont want to pay more than 1000 USD (currently calyx M can be found as look as 899 AUD) calyx M is your solution. I have been lately using it with AKT8iE and it is getting far more head-time than KSE1500 which I love as much.

I do not mind all the problems calyx M has, all but one. At times it does not display so of my files and calyx M has been no help at all. They are completely silent, no sound what so ever.

Lately i have read about @WindowsX calyx M andriod mod which said to improve the sound of calyx M and stability. I havent tried it as it cost more than 100 USD. Considering how much I love calyx M I might use it.

To me AK line sound more inline with Lotoo and Calyx M sounds more inline with questyle dap. But to me all the AK IEM sound best with calyx M. The JH Layla pairing and calyx M is one of those experiences that one must hear for oneself. I am looking forward to JH Rosie pairing. I will report back later.

For FW mod alone, it doesn't cost more than $100. That'd be for software+hardware mod including shipping.

Thanks for the clarification. Can you let us know what the hardware mod is about?

I'll replace all caps and opamps with some internal tweaks. All mods are made by order, I'll inspect device and order parts to make perfect mod. If you want highend source quality like Emm Labs/Esoteric in portable setup, you won't be disappointed. :)

Wow. Like Redwine mods but for Calyx.

Can you please PM me information as well with regards to modding my unit. Please let me know what you do as well. Thanks!

It's been a very long time since I stopped-by this thread.

I'm sorry to see people saying Digital&Analog are not responding to issues and not updating the firmware.

I had hoped they would refine the Calyx-M into a slick machine, and maybe even update it to a Mk2 model, building upon lessons learned from the first model.

The Calyx-M was quite a classy first effort, for a high-end DAP - I wonder if D&A still watch this thread, at the very least?

Calyx company made initiative design and there's a few of promising products launched including Calyx M. It's sad to see that not many audiophiles can be appreciated with quality that doesn't need to change every year yet. I ended up modifying a few iBasso and Fiio DAPs here thanks to their budget releases.

Even with the lousy battery and UI, I love this DAP. I went though so many DAP's before settling on this.

To me Calyx M is 80% there. The last 20% can be obtained if the following issues are fixed:

  • Laggy UI,
  • No true gapless,
  • The silly M-jack that is a must for most of my IEM and
  • Poor battery life,
  • Optical out,
  • Folder browsing

Soundwise I cannot fault it, UI setup is perfect to me, expansion slot is perfect. To me that takes calyx M to the 80% mark. I personally dislike their poor communication. They never respond to facebook PM or email. I think as far as they are concerned there is no point spending anymore resources on calyx M.

Yes, I have noticed that you have released an alternative firmware for the DX80, with some happy users, at version 1.3

Congratulations.

Nice to see someone helping to improve the Chinese DAP firmwares!
