Haha! I think the ladies are not worried: they like to think they are more interesting. And we allow them to continue to have that delusion. Certainly keeps the peace. wink.gif

exactly... they need to fix too many things: APE support, Folder browser, battery life, less buggy UI, better sound quality USB DAC support, etc.

APE support. That's a pun, right?  ;-)

I lucked out today. I found a guy at the Hi-Fi Mall with Dale CPF 1 Watt 1 ohm resistors. (It's funny how these cable guys are. He didn't pull them out until he decided that he liked me. So the resistors I ordered from HK are now garbage. But in relative terms they actually were garbage.)

3.5mm extension jacks are hard to come by here so instead of creating a new adapter he installed the Dales inside the jack housing of an 18" mini to mini HP extension cable that I have using silver solder. All very professional.

And... it seems that a major M problem has been solved. The M now does the Ochuraku Flat-4 Kaede. My test track - the one with the obvious bass distortion when driven directly - plays clean now. Just as important, I am sitting here listening to a stream of rock n' roll and prog rock songs - the type that the Kaede was born to sing - and everything sounds just fine thank you. With the 1 ohm adapter, the M and Kaede play nicely together, a compelling blend of the smoothness of the M and the rockability of the Kaede. The bass is right where it should be on the Kaede. The M does tame the Kaede's treble a bit and there is nothing wrong with that.

Based on what I have heard so far, I don't see any reason to use the Quickstep between the M and the Kaede anymore.

Happy.

To be clear, I am not going to use the 1 ohm adapter with the Lab1 or Heaven VI. There is nothing wrong with the M's zero impedance with BA IEMs.

I still have to test it with the my FAD dynamics - 1601SC and 1602SS aka PF IX - but I expect good things. I am just enjoying the Kaede too much right now to switch. With the adapter, M + Kaede is a very nice combination, I would say about as good as I have gotten the Kaede to sound.

It is not my problem anymore but Calyx really should provide a 1 ohm adapter with the M for dynamic IEMs. I expect that 2 ohms would be the ideal for even greater stability.

Last night I tried CalyxM as source (again) after using QA360 for few days. Others might disagree but here's what I found...

The bass isn't as tight/fast as I hear from QA360, the mid is about on par, while the HF is a bit better than QA360. The QA360 can make PM-1 sing effortless while the M is having a bit of problem. Or let me put it this way, with QA360, I found the PM-1 is exactly as what I expected from planar headphones (from the info I gathered prior purchasing PM-1). While with M, I have to look for PM-1 sound signature.

So overall, I prefer QA360 as source.

Considering the M's asking price, this is kinda disappointing. But at least I found the M is great as DAP (that is without using external amp).

The system was:

Calyx M/QLS QA360 -> balanced dynalo (set to dual mono mode).

I think it is about compromise and finding the right synergy. It is surely not cheap and not perfect but sadly it is the best I have had the chance to get my hands on considering the UI and file compatibility. I am an IEM user so for most of my gear I had good pairing but yes you are right one can find a better and cheaper DAP that perhaps suits their gear better.

Anyone know if the Calyx M will be at CANJAM 2014 in October for auditioning?

Got my Calyx M today. I love the sound, very thick and clean. Just enough of everything: bass, treble, mids are to die for. I tried it with Roxanne (excellent), Beyrdynamic T70p (near excellent),

it can even drive my HD800 straight from the HO, but definitely will benefit from adding the amp.

UI is very good, pretty clean and simple.

Touch scroll working smoothly.

Library scan of 128G card is done in 2 min.

No problem playing any type of files.

Gapless work perfectly.

No hiss with my Roxanne.

I can play albums by folder (this is my favorite way), album, artist, song.

It has 3 electronic gain switches. Very helpful to toggle between IEMs and full size cans.

Physical buttons in right place. ( I love the magnetic volume slider.)

Cons so far:

FW update doesn't work on Mac.

A little big ( about the size of Samsung Galaxy).

Battery life is only about 5 hours. ( Thanks god I work in the office)

My conclusion: out of all unamped DAPs I had and heard before ( RWAK100, AK120, ZX1, DX50, DX90) Calyx M has the best sound quality and UI. IMHO.
