$999 Calyx M with DXD + DSD, 64GB + SD + µSD storage - Page 233

Wanted to report back some issues and annoyances I've encountered after a week of use:

Major:

Mandatory library re-scan after a reboot: This basically renders the M unusable for the first few minutes after a cold boot.

Delayed album thumbnail display: Seems like the thumbnails are generated (slowly) on-the-fly the first time you scroll to that part of the view (I believe the generated thumbnails are then cached until you do a reboot). Not helpful when only the first 10 characters of the album name is shown, and you get a screen full of indistinguishable "XXX: ....". Might not be a problem though if you don't have much classical music.

Poor battery life: 4.5 hours of 16/44.1; 3.5 hours of DSD64 playback (with the screen off 99.9% of the time)

  Folder Play: 'nuff said

  Sluggish UI in general

Minor:

Battery leak:15-20% of battery is gone 8-10 hours after a full recharge (obviously the device is off in between)

Sometimes a track would appear twice in the library. A full library refresh fixes the issue.

The first second of a track gets cut off. Happens to the first track of an album being played, just like the X5 with F/W 2.0, HM901, DX90 etc..

  No display brightness adjustment

Wow... i think this alone :Poor battery life: 4.5 hours of 16/44.1;

should be a deal breaker for most... not even 24 bit..

I am going to talk to Square Wave (the distributor for Greater China) tomorrow to see if mine is a lemon (regarding the battery).

Please report your issues.

4.5 hour battery life is a real deal breaker. AK120 II can play up to 14 hours.

firmware 1.0 should come out ASAP.

Wow, why oh why they made great hardware with questionable software (iBasso, Fiio, Hifiman and now this)? Those are really deal breaker to me.

you can buy this from    http://jaben.co.th/

translate their page into English via google translator or chrome translator. Then buy the device via Paypal. They will ship it to your U.S address via Fedex.

Thanks for the info .. but i will wait until someone is selling it here, the price with Jaben is always more expensive + shipping + tax.. maybe not a good deal x me.

Very kind of you kawaivpc1 ;)

IMO Calyx released the M a bit too rushy, a bit too premature, as they obviously had not perfected the software issues, BUT I can't say the released it too soon, as it is a good timing for it to enter the battlefield. Any later release would mean they lost all ground to AK120mkII and AK240, so from the business point of view I can't fault their decision. Hardware they did it brilliantly, software they can always remedy it later by firmware updates. Of cos everyone would want their purchases already the perfected final product but it seems that for marketing reasons that never materialized.

From the naming of their firmware (0.95 as of now) I guess this is still not the fully remedied version yet AND they know it.

Ah FYI I am a more than satisfied owner of the Calyx M and the SQ never failed to wow me~ Especially its uncanny capability to make even lossy AAC files downloaded from iTunes store sound ridiculously good and expansive..........and coming from the AK100 the M's battery life is terrible, but with this sort of SQ, a big nice screen, and a rather powerful class A amp what can u expect..........it's just a tradeoff thing. At least I dun miss the battery life of AK100 at all when listening to the M :gs1000smile:

Alright i am in, it is either going to wow me disappoint me. Too bad i don't have C4 but that is the sound i like M to compete against.

looking forward to hearing it.

Didn't get to A/B but my demo of the M does remind me of the C4 the most.  And applying Audiophool theorem #1 and #2*, M will sound better.

* #1: Newer is ALWAYS better

* #2: MOAR expensive is MOAR better

:p

(Joking aside I think you'd do fine as yes I think M is an improved C4.  As mentioned in my early demo impression, sound is the least of my concerns on M.  Looking forward to your impression!)

Hi everybody - this is my first post on here - just about the major source of reliable information about the Calyx M.

I'm in Australia. I was seriously thinking about getting the AK240, but eventually went for the M because it's roughly one-third the price.

I didn't get to audition either of these players (due to living miles away from a big city), so it was a gamble to go ahead and order the M.

But after two weeks of listening through 2 different sets of stereo gear and my set of iem's, I can say I have no regrets and am astounded by the clarity.

I listen mainly to material from 16/44.1 through to .dff and it's all good! So, very happy with the main purpose of the player and would recommend it to anyone.

However, I have had all the problems mentioned here by Pekingduck, although to me these are minor issues compared to the sound.

The one thing that does rather annoy me  is that the customer service by the Calyx company is rather poor. I see there is a Facebook page, but I'm not a member of that and would rather have someone send me an email, especially when I've written 3 to their website. Yes, it does seem that the product launch of the M was a little rushed, as there is no manual (not even a PDF). For example, it took me half a day from un-boxing to figure out how to charge the M and load the drivers.

Yes, the software issues can hopefully be fixed in future firmwares. But the hardware is already excellent.

wow hopefully they could change how they update this player. direct from computer will be much easier ( though some companies dont even let you update firmwares yourself). just a better option
