$999 Calyx M with DXD + DSD, 64GB + SD + µSD storage - Page 223

Now if only we could buy it from somewhere that would ship to NA :(

I personally would prefer to have the EQ option, but just to throw in an alternative to the whole "it's a reference player" argument - one of my friends' hearing was damaged some years ago and, whilst he can hear normally, since that happened he is VERY sensitive to treble (he now has to wear ear plugs to live concerts as cymbals and high guitar and keyboard notes cause him some pain). He has had to tone treble down on EVERY DAP and music player he's had since, and I have no doubt he will have to do the same if/when it gets to the point he's in the market for a hi-res DAP.

Just to show it's not always black and white...

I just installed this firmware and I must say the so-called folder play is horribly implemented. I expected directory browsing but all it gives you is a flattened list of directories containing music files..totally useless... And to make it worse, the album view now has all these directories mixed in. It's confusing...

Rockbox did it perfectly years and years ago. Is it so difficult to do it for f***s sake? It is something very basic, we are not talking about rocket science in here.

Please post your impression about the new update. Does it work well like rockbox?

What a disappointment. It's obvious that the manufacturers of this player don't listen to music. There's no way you can tag 440GB of music files one by one. It will take you few months. It seems like they're not into listening to music and making things in their point of view. The folder view must be like directory view that shows all main folders in a card alphabetically, not the whole folders at a time. They didn't understand this concept. This type of folder play update doesn't make a big difference at all. I'd wait for update v1.0 with completely reworked folder directory view function.

Tried to downgrade to 0.6 without success  Calyx M owners beware.

My unit seems to sound warmer than the one I demoed last week (maybe it's just that my mood was different...?). Now I'd say the signature is warm but transparency is still good. Separation and soundstage is nice.

Other observations:

- The placement of physical buttons are poor (exactly the place where fingers would land on when you're trying to grab the device). However these buttons can be disabled when the device is locked so it doesn't bother me much (I never use physical buttons except volume control)

- UI is faster than 0.6

- M4A support is buggy, some files don't work.

I like the sound but the UI still needs some work. Calyx, please implement proper directory browsing WITHOUT having to scan the cards.

Yep they should have just copied what other players have been doing for years. Why reinvent the wheel?

I am not sure. Actually I received it just a couple hours ago and then upgraded to 0.95 almost immediately.

Disappointing reading this...I really. hope they fix these issues...

I just upgraded mine about 30 minutes ago...and I think the sound got even better( so I call the Calyx M the best sounded DAP so far, I also own hm802 n dx90).... and I love the idea of changing impedance...

yeah... folder play?(one of the new function added) They coud do better job, but except that, I'm quite satisfied w/overall performance w/.95.

File Search function is pretty comfortable w/me.

Please test your battery life and post your result here. Previously, some users have reported short battery life. I hope this firmware fixed that.

I will write an e-mail to Calyx developers to fix folder view into a directory view of SD cards and storage.

I doubt anyone here will consider 'folder play' as an improvement.

how about creating play lists? is that hard?

Yeap... improved. Seems like it's a different player...

I'm playing files, most of'em are flacs or bigger onez...

it's been running for almost 6 hours and not dead yet.

Seems like it just meet what D&A's claim about if  not better.

The heat problem seems no more an issue.. cos it doesn't get hot after playing 3 dsd albums straight.

Anda... the the most welcome change to me.... no more clipping sound!! yay! lol

The sound wise? I'm sure it sounded better w/.95, seems like the body of sound got more solid (should I put it bold?)and even sharper w/ details,

but somehow... I kinda miss the sound w/.6 because .6 sounded kinda... more natural (how can I describe.. It sounded like the sound was sprinkled in the air... if i put it poetical wise,)

but if I must choose one, .95 wins my heart for sure.
