If Calyx M with such an aggressive and thick signature is just an amplifier and not also a DAC, then I think it is fine since you can mix and match it to complement the SQ of other components in your audio rig. But D&A design M having such a unique natural/warm signature without any optical/digital LO, with the claim that their mindset is for users to use it as a standalone portable DAP and not meant to plug it into a bigger audio rig. The non-neutral signature greatly restricts the DAP's compatibility to a wider range of IEMs/cans and probably also to only a certain genre of music. I simply do not understand what is the point of designing such a DAP. D&A initially claims that M is very similar sounding to their Femto, but it seems like it is now the complete opposite.

I'm confused by these sudden references to D&A as the maker and/or designer of the M. I thought it was Calyx. Must be something I do not know. Please who or what is D&A?

AFAIK, Digital & Analog are the parent company of the Calyx brand.

Monkey_God: waiting for the conclusion of your comparison!

Good news for those waiting on the DX90 usb drivers...  The Calyx M already has drivers up for download and isn't a software/firmware usb implementation but a hardware xmos based setup.  If nothing else it means that it is highly likely to actually work and not be another bullet point on the sales sheet with the hope that no one actually tries to use it at home.  Looking at you AK :P

Again from the facebook page

Calyx M wrote: "I can say it has all the signatures of Femto."

So what is going on ? They say the M has the same sound signature as the Femto which is highly regarded as a $6000 dac. Yet the M is just not getting impressions indicating a top notch sound.

Sauntere, I have said it before and I will say it again: In this situation, you had better find a way to trust your own ears.

Personally, having read all of the early impressions on here and weighted them as I do, I am rather intrigued by the M.

Yes that would be ideal... however it is not something that can happen since there are no dealers where i live. I can only go by impressions.

Fair enough. I have bought lots of kit on impressions. Then I suggest wait for more. They will come.

Go and try to audition an In Ear Stage Diver SD3 if you can get access to it. So far IMO it has the closest sounding signature to Calyx M based on my memory. Also wait for more people to post their review of M. They may have different taste compared to mine since my preference is EX-1000 and 1plus2 style of signatures, so they may have different opinions of it. More impression will come when the actual model launches in May/June. The sound signature may also change in the launch version.

Well apparently they will be at an audio show in Japan this weekend and also one in Germany.

Hopefully there will be some feedback from those events very soon. I would expect that the demos at those events would represent the final sound signature, otherwise what's the point.

We should be getting more impressions in the next few days since Calyx is attending the Tokyo headphone show (held today and tomorrow)

That's good news - Currawong will be there if I'm not mistaken and hopefully will be able to give it a try. He has used every other high-end dap available afaik, and is very good at explaining what he hears in layman's terms. He takes some good pictures, too.
